Location of the municipality of Mallakastra

The municipality of Mallakastra ( Albanian  Bashkia e Mallakastrës ) is one of the 61 municipalities in Albania . The main town of the municipality is Ballsh ; it belongs to the Qark Fier and has 25,062 inhabitants. The population is mainly Muslim , but more than half of them are Bektashi . The area with an area of 388 square kilometers formed the Mallakastra district until a territorial reform in 2015 .

Oil production at Ballsh

The Mallakastra region, from which the name of the village derives, means the south to the level of Myzeqe subsequent hills between Berat and Vlora . However, only a few elevations exceed 500 meters. The highest point in the municipality is the Maja e Shëndëllise at 712  m above sea level. A. The landscape becomes flatter towards the west and north: The south-western border of the district is formed by the Vjosa , which formed a wide valley here. Towards the north the hills run out into the Myzeqe plain.

Mallakastra is located south of Fier on the most important thoroughfare to southern Albania, which leads via Ballsh to Tepelena , Gjirokastra and the Greek border. The Mallakastra is the center of oil production in Albania. Numerous oil pumps , but also polluted waters, destroyed landscapes and polluted air testify to this branch of the economy and the fact that little importance is attached to environmental protection . Ballsh is the site of a refinery and the end of the railway line from Fier.

Nikaia at the loo

Although today it is more of a peripheral region, Mallakastra has a rich history. There is an early Christian church in Ballsh . A few kilometers south of Ballsh is the important Illyrian city of Byllis , not far from it at the village of Klos, the ancient Illyrian city of Nikaia .
