The municipality of Mirdita ( Albanian  Bashkia e Mirditës ) is one of the 61 municipalities in Albania . The area of the municipality with an area of 867 square kilometers in the Qark Lezha corresponds to the former Mirdita district and includes the core area of the Mirdita region . The municipality has 22,103 inhabitants (2011 census). The local authorities, however, indicated a number of 38,878 inhabitants in 2007. The main town is Rrëshen .

geography

Main street of Rubik

The area of the municipality of Mirdita is separated to the west from the coastal plain and the sea by a mountain range (almost 1000  m above sea level ). Behind it lies a heavily furrowed and eroded plateau , which today is more likely to be described as a hilly country and especially in the east and north in higher mountain ranges up to 2100  m above sea level. A. passes. The highest point is the Maja e Kunorës në Selitë at 2121  m above sea level. A. The average height of the landscape is around 400  m above sea level. A. The area is completely drained by the River Fan , with the exception of a few valleys on the southern and eastern borders .

The community is sparsely populated. There are only two larger localities: today's main town Rrëshen (2011 8803 inhabitants with surrounding villages) and the small former mining town of Rubik (2011 4454 inhabitants with surrounding villages). The mining town of Kurbnesh, which formerly had several thousand inhabitants, is now practically depopulated. The other villages are lost in the hilly landscape. The area has been severely affected by rural exodus since 1992 .

Economy and Transport

New highway and old houses at Reps

Copper and other soil ores were mined in various places . There were important mines at Rubik and Kurbnesh . There were metallurgical factories in Rrëshen and Rubik . The collapse of world prices , the completely outdated technology and a lack of investors left the mining after the collapse of communism but come to a halt. Therefore, there are currently hardly any well-known manufacturing companies in the municipality. It was not until 2006 that Canadian companies became active that also found gold during exploration , but also intend to mine zinc and copper. The contaminated sites of the mines still pollute the surroundings.

Fan i Vogël near Klos before the motorway was built

Tens of thousands of people from the Mirdita have left the region since 1990 to find work either abroad or in the urban centers of Albania. Others moved to the coastal plain because the small plots of land in the poorly fertile mountains could no longer feed them. Many of those who stayed behind live on remittances from migrants.

The Mirdita is crossed by the main road from Durrës to Kosovo . The new A1 motorway to Kukës - so far Albania's largest infrastructure project - was officially opened in June 2009. The traffic is handled in parts on two of four lanes. The motorway leads from Rrëshen to the northeast through the valley of the Kleiner Fan , which was previously barely developed. In the extreme northeast corner of the municipality near Thirra , the Kalimash tunnel - with over five kilometers Albania's longest tunnel - was built, which leads from there to Kalimash in the municipality of Kukës. The construction of this road has brought work to the region for a while and is contributing to the boom throughout the mountainous north-eastern Bania.

The railway line from Hekurudha Shqiptare to Rrëshen was shut down. Today the A1 runs on the former route from Milot  to Rubik.
