Marin Mema (born March 22, 1981 in Tirana ) is an Albanian journalist and former soccer player . He is a journalist for Top Channel and writes for Gazeta Shqiptare . He often works with his wife, the historian Elena Kocaqi. Mema described himself as a “ investigative journalist ” who wanted to expose “political corruption ” and human rights issues. He regularly reports on the situation and the history of Albanians in the neighboring states of Albania and is a supporter of Albanian reunification and other areas populated by ethnic Albanians ( Greater Albania ).

Life

Marin started playing football at Dinamo Tirana when he was nine . In 1997 he was a member of the Albanian national youth soccer team. However, after twelve years he had to give up the sport because he suffered from injuries.

In July 2003 Mema graduated from the University of Tirana with a degree in Journalism .

He gained international attention through research in Greece. In 2011 and 2012 a small team of journalists led by Mema reported from Margariti , Kastoria , Florina and Filiates (formerly Çamëria ). They tried to clarify what has become of the property of the displaced and partly murdered Albanian Çamen who had been expropriated by the Greek state. They also wanted to establish contact with any remaining Çamen families. However, the local police and community authorities became aware of the team and told them that there were a total of six Albanian families in Margariti, but that they had immigrated as job seekers after 1990. Because of this, the authorities saw no reason why the Albanian journalists should stay in Margariti. Mema's team was followed at every turn. The incident was quickly picked up in the Albanian press: the Greek authorities were accused of violating freedom of the press. Based on his reports, Mema was refused entry to Greece in August 2012. He had been declared persona non grata because he posed a threat to the security of Greece. Albanian nationals have been able to enter the European Union without a visa since 2010 . The station Top Channel said he would stand by its journalists and ask the Albanian and Greek governments to enlightenment. The incident would also be reported to the European Commission for Human Rights . The Union of Journalists of Albania protested against the entry ban in front of the Greek embassy in Tirana. Mema has also been attacked by the Serbian authorities.

On the initiative of Mema, Albanian associations abroad in the United States raised US $ 1,300,000 for the victims of the earthquake in Albania on November 26, 2019 .
