The 5650 meter long Kalimash Tunnel in northeastern Albania is the longest road tunnel in the country. As part of the Albanian Motorway 1 , it connects the cities of Rrëshen and Kukës and passes under the Maja e Runjës ( 1856  m above sea level ) on the border between the communities of Mirdita and Kukës. The southern portal is near the village of Thirra in the upper valley of the Fan i Vogël at around 900  m above sea level. A. The north portal is located in the mountains south of the village of Kalimash at around 800  m above sea level. A.

The tunnel was planned and built as part of the Rrëshen – Kalimash section of the A1 by the US / Turkish joint venture Bechtel & Enka (BEJV).

South portal

Already in June 2009 the tunnel was officially opened with a tube by the Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his Kosovar counterpart Hashim Thaçi and opened to traffic. However, it soon had to be closed again for maintenance and final work. The second tube was not opened to traffic until October 2010.

At the end of March 2018, a toll was started not far from the northern tunnel exit . There were civil protests against the toll, in which five police officers and 12 demonstrators were injured. The toll booth was set on fire. As a result, the collection of fees was suspended again. Tolls have to be paid again since mid-September. The fee per passage is € 5 for a car and up to € 22 for heavy traffic; Residents of the region can use the tunnel at a discounted rate of 100 Lek.
