geography

Patok lagoon

Kurbin occupies a short coastal strip on the Adriatic coast in northern Albania , which is ten kilometers long by the water and up to 15 kilometers inland. The coastal plain is around ten kilometers deep. This is followed by another ten kilometers of hills and mountains, the northern foothills of the Skanderbeg Mountains . At the eastern border with the municipality of Mat heights of over 1000  m above sea level are found A. achieved. The Maja e Hutit is the highest point in the municipality at 1316  m above sea level. A. In the north Kurbin is bounded by the river Mat . In the south, the short coastal strip of the municipality ends at the mouth of the Ishëm .

The coastal plain was only completely drained by the communists . Until then, the area was hardly inhabited; the few buildings were erected on stilts. To the north of Mamurras there were extensive forests, which were notorious for bands of robbers who hid there and attacked travelers. There is hardly anything left of these forests.

The coast is still characterized by large lagoons and wetlands. The Patok lagoon is particularly well known .

There are sulfur springs on the southern outskirts of Laç .

economy

Abandoned factories north of Laç

After the closure of the industries in Laç and Mamurras, a large part of the population is again working in agriculture. The unemployment is considered the largest in the country. Despite everything, the area was still a destination for migrants from the mountain areas of Northern Albania in recent years.

With the construction of the new SH1 expressway from Tirana to Lezha in the coastal plain, the villages and towns of Kurbin have been freed from through traffic. On the other hand, "life" is now roaring past Kurbin, as the places are poorly connected to the expressway. The railway line of Hekurudha e Shqipërisë is also of no major importance.

Also the tourism has hardly developed in Kurbin. Patok Beach has a below average infrastructure. There are also concerns about the quality of the water on this stretch of coast, as the Mat and Ishëm rivers are likely to still carry a lot of industrial and urban wastewater. Pollution is also significant around the disused factories in Laç .

history

The ethnographic and geographical region Kurbin was first mentioned in the 14th century. At that time the area was called Korbin or Korvin . This meant in particular the hills and mountains between Kruja and the Mat. The swampy coastal plain was only made habitable in the 20th century. The historic center of Kurbin is the village of Delbnisht a few kilometers east of Laç. The women from Kurbin wear the costume of Mirdita , while the men wear the costume of Kruja.

Kurbin belonged to the Kruja district until the early 1990s . In 1992 it was founded as Laç County. In 1999 it was renamed the Kurbin district . The official abbreviation was then KB , but the abbreviation LA was used on license plates for even longer . In 2015 the district was abolished and its municipalities were merged into the municipality Kurbin .
