Carl Johannes Tycho Mommsen (born May 23, 1819 in Garding , Schleswig-Holstein , † November 30, 1900 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German classical philologist and high school director .

Life

Tycho Mommsen, son of pastor Jens Mommsen and Sophie Elisabeth Krumbhaar, was the younger brother of the historian and Nobel laureate in literature Theodor Mommsen . The family moved to Oldesloe in 1821 . From 1834 the brothers visited the Christianeum in Altona .

From here he went to the University of Kiel to study philology . Here he met the poet Theodor Storm in 1839 and, together with him and his brother Theodor, published the songbook of three friends in 1843 .

After his marriage to the lawyer’s daughter Franziska de Boor (1824-1902) in April 1849, he became a teacher at the grammar school in Husum . In 1850 he had to leave Husum for political reasons and went to Altona. At Easter 1851 he became a teacher at the secondary school in Eisenach .

After a time as the rector of the citizen school in Oldenburg , he was director of the municipal grammar school in Frankfurt am Main from 1864 to 1886 . He died on December 3, 1900 in Frankfurt. His grave is in the Frankfurt main cemetery (Gewann F 1608).

Mommsen's wife was the daughter of the lawyer Carl Friedrich de Boor (1776–1848). The couple had eight children. Her son Jens Mommsen (1852–1922) was a doctor; her daughter Emma Kathinka (1857–1943) married the archivist Claus Albert de Boor (1852–1945).
