The Bredstedt railway water tower is on Lornsenstrasse, opposite the station building on the other side of the railway tracks.

Building

The water tower is a brick building with a circular floor plan and a height of 24 m. A flat conical roof forms the end . A small outbuilding with a hipped roof is attached to both sides . Inside there was originally a Barkhausen container with a capacity of 140 m³.

Original usage

Shortly after the opening of the Hindenburgdamm , the water tower was built in 1928 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn . It was primarily used to supply water to the steam locomotives on the Bredstedt – Löwenstedt railway line . This line branched off from the Marschbahn in Bredstedt and connected it with the Flensburg – Husum line .

Decommissioning and further use

After the Second World War , the tower was shut down. The railway tracks to Löwenstedt had been dismantled during the war, so that there was no longer any need for supplies. All technical equipment and the container were then removed. In 1980 the tower was sold and rebuilt in 1981. After that, different restaurants were operated one after the other in the tower. However, the last restaurant moved out of the tower in 2007, and it has been empty since then.
