The Clementshus now houses the Danish senior housing in the city Bredstedt (Danish Bredsted , Frisian Bräist ), bordering the Schleswig Geest in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein .

The Danish senior apartments in Bredstedt

The founder Anton Clement was the royal chancellor at the Danish court and was bailiff in Bredstedt for 17 years. He was born in Hackstedt, where his father was a princely mayor. In Bredstedt, Anton Clement lived unmarried with his sister in today's Herrmannstrasse (Gösegang). On March 9th, 1711 he bequeathed his fortune to the building of a poor house of the "Kommüne Bredstedt". In pietism , it was a call of the time to help the poor. The building became one of the many built for the poor by wealthy people in the Kingdom of Denmark . The poor house with eight apartments was built in his garden nine years after his death in 1720.

The city of Bredstedt sold the house in 1970 to the Sydslesvigsk Forening (the Danish cultural association for southern Schleswig) in order to set up a meeting and church hall in the building. In addition, space should be created for the Danish youth club. Due to a lack of funds, however, the building could not be restored.

Renovation in 1987

It was not until Dansk Sundhedstjeneste for Sydslesvig (the Danish health service for southern Schleswig) took over the house in 1987 that it was possible to carry out a comprehensive restoration and set up six senior citizens' apartments with the help of public grants and a generous donation from the Danish APMøller Foundation . Today the Danish school and kindergarten are located opposite the Clementshus.

Renovation 2015

2014–2015, after 27 years of use, the building was again fundamentally restored with a donation of kr. 3.2 million from the APMøller Foundation.
