Wackerballig ( Danish Vakkerballe ) is part of the municipality of Gelting in the Schleswig-Flensburg district , Schleswig-Holstein . The municipality is located in the eastern part of the fishing peninsula directly on the Flensburg Fjord .

Wackerballig offers a campsite , several holiday homes, motorhome parking spaces and a marina with 230 berths. The marina, built as an island port, is the starting point for sailing trips to the Danish South Seas, as well as to Sønderborg and Flensburg . There are no shopping opportunities, there are in Gelting, about a kilometer away.

Like Gelting, the place was first mentioned as Wakærbol in 1231 in Waldemar the Victor's Earth Book . The ending bol ( Danish bøl 'büll' ) stands for place, settlement and was later reinterpreted as convex ( Danish balle ). The name Wacker ( urnordisch WakraR ) is a nickname that has the same stem as today's German word “wacker” and the old Norse “vakr” (old: awake, mindful), which was continued in all Scandinavian languages . Wackerballig was always under the administration of the nearby Gelting estate. From 1871 it formed an independent rural community, which was incorporated into Gelting in 1938.
