The windmill Charlotte is a Dutchman with a compass rose in the Geltinger Birk (municipality of Nieby ) in Schleswig-Holstein . The structure was erected in 1826. It is probably named after Charlotte Louise von Spörcken , the wife of Seneca Inggersen, Baron of the Empire of Geltingen , who died in 1816 and who bought Gut Gelting in 1758. Another theory assumes that Charlotte von Bjelke, a granddaughter of Baron zu Gelting, gave the building its name.

history

The Geltinger Birk was created in 1821 by dike in the Great Noores, a side bay of the Baltic Sea. In order to pump surface water from the drained lowlands of the Birk, the then Geltinger Rittmeister von Hobe had the mill built in 1826 on the dam leading from Goldhöft to Birk on the so-called Goldhöftberg . The construction costs for the combined scoop and grain mill amounted to around 9700 Reichstaler.

From then on, the structure primarily served to drain the Birk. The necessary transport of water from the lowlands to higher lying areas was realized with an Archimedean screw . When there was no wind, an electric motor drove the water screw. At that time there was about 333 hectares of agricultural land in the Birk.

"Charlotte" windmill in non-public private ownership (former scoop and grain mill)

Grain was also ground in the mill until 1938, before the last miller lost his job on the edge of the Birk. Then the building fell into disrepair, and was used as a scoop mill until 1971. In 1970 the former owners of Castle Gelting had Charlotte renovated for 120,000 DM. A year later, the mill functionality as a scoop mill was replaced by a pumping station built next to the mill, which has been regulating the water level in the Birk ever since. Today the listed mill is privately owned and can therefore only be viewed from the outside. In autumn 2013, the owner had the thatched roof and the wings renewed as part of another demanding repair.
