Philipp Sigismund of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel
Philipp Sigismund Duke of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (also: Philipp Siegmund , born July 1, 1568 at Hesse Castle ; † March 19, 1623 in Iburg ) was a Protestant prince-bishop of Verden and Osnabrück .
Life
Philipp Sigismund was the second son of Duke Julius of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . He was supposed to be bishop of Minden . His older brother Heinrich Julius , who was also Bishop of Halberstadt , renounced this diocese in 1585 in favor of his brother Philipp Sigismund. The formalities alone could be done quickly enough and so instead he became the successor of the late Bishop Eberhard von Holle in Verden in 1586 . However, he never let himself as a Protestant confirm in this office by the Pope and the investiture by the emperor he received only 1598th
In 1591 he also became Prince-Bishop of the Osnabrück Monastery . He was also canon in Bremen and Magdeburg and from 1598 provost at Halberstadt Cathedral . When the county of Hoya was divided in 1589, he received three offices around Verden .
Philipp Sigismund lived alternately in his residences Schloss Iburg and Rotenburg (Wümme) , where he made a contribution to the expansion of these and, for example, also built the Jagdschlösschen (Bad Iburg) and the castle mill in 1595 . The renaissance castle he built in Rotenburg instead of the previous castle was destroyed by Tilly's troops in 1626 .
In 1600 he had a new Lutheran church order introduced in the bishopric of Verden ; in his share of power in Osnabrück, however, the confessionally mixed status quo remained. Philipp Sigismund promoted the Protestant Ratsgymnasium Osnabrück , founded in 1595 , but on the other hand heeded the promise made in his election surrender to the cathedral chapter not to do anything against the Catholic rite.
In Verden Abbey, he promoted trade through a reform of the coinage system and in Osnabrück through the introduction of linen laying , testing centers for monitoring linen produced in the household.
He was buried in Verden Cathedral next to the tomb he built for his great-uncle, Bishop Georg , in a sarcophagus made in 1594 (since the renovation in 1830 in the south aisle under the west gallery).
