Prince-Bishop Johann Friedrich

Johann Friedrich von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf (born September 1, 1579 in Gottorf ; † September 3, 1634 in Altkloster near Buxtehude ) was Protestant Archbishop of Bremen , Prince-Bishop of Lübeck and Bishop of Verden .

He was the son of Adolf von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf and Christine von Hessen . He had two children. Friedrich and Christine were legitimized by the emperor in 1621 and raised to the nobility under the name of Holstein . Her mother was Anna Dobbel from Bremervörde .

After his brother Johann Adolf von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf became duke in 1590, he gave up the archbishopric of Bremen to Johann Friedrich in 1596. In 1599, Johann Friedrich nevertheless claimed his share of the inheritance in the duchies. In return, Johann Adolf promised the successor in his dioceses for his sons. Until his death in 1634, Johann Friedrich received the income from the offices of Tremsbüttel, Steinhorst, Cismar , Oldenburg, Fehmarn and Neustadt. In 1607 Johann Friedrich also took over the title of prince-bishop of Lübeck from his brother. From 1631 he was also Bishop of Verden. He held all offices until his death in 1634.
