Klaus Niehr
Klaus Niehr (born August 13, 1955 in Kaldenkirchen ) is a German art historian .
biography
Klaus Niehr studied art history, older German and Romance studies and received his doctorate in 1987 at the University of Bonn with a thesis on Central German sculpture of the 13th century. Until 1992 he was a research assistant at the Free University of Berlin , where he completed his habilitation in 1996. In 1993/94 he took on a visiting professorship at the Humboldt University and at the University of the Arts in Berlin. From 1997 he was a professor at the University of Marburg . After a substitute professorship at the University of Basel , he has been Professor of Art History at the University of Osnabrück since 2004 .
The main focus of his research lies in the field of architecture and visual arts of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The focus is on the political instrumentalization of the arts and the representation of reality that takes place through them. Another area of his work is the history of science, especially the reception of the Middle Ages in text and images from the 18th to the 20th century, as well as the formation of categories of art-historical order and valuation.
Niehr has been a member of the Historical Commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen since 2008 and a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen since 2010 .
