Katharina Krause (* 1960 in Schlüchtern ) is a German art historian and university professor .

Life and work

She passed her Abitur at the Philippinum Grammar School (Marburg) . After studying art history , classical archeology and history at the University of Marburg , the LMU Munich and the Sorbonne , she received her doctorate in 1988 from the University of Munich. She then taught at the University of Freiburg , where she completed her habilitation in 1993.

In 1996 she took over a professorship for art history at the Philipps University of Marburg . She had previously turned down a call to the University of Münster in 1996, as well as accepting a professorship at the University of Cologne in 2003 . Her art-historical research focuses on French art and architecture and its imitations in German-speaking countries in the 17th and 18th centuries, the visual arts in southern Germany around 1500, and image and text in specialist art-historical literature.

Katharina Krause has been active in the academic self-administration since 1999, for example repeatedly dean of her faculty for German and Art Studies (1999–2000, 2004–2006). She has also been working intensively on the German Research Foundation (DFG) since 2000. She is currently a member of the scientific “Advisory Board of the Humanities Funding Initiative of the DFG” (since 2004) and has been a member of the DFG Senate since 2006, where she was re-elected in 2009. In addition, she is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Forum for Art History in Paris (DFK), one of ten DGIA institutes of the Max Weber Foundation . 2006–2010 she was one of the three vice presidents of the Philipps University, responsible for “research and knowledge transfer”.

At the municipal level, she has been an expert on the redesign of the inner-city campus of the University of Marburg in the “Advisory Board for Urban Design” of the City of Marburg since 1998. At the Hessian state level, she has been contributing her specialist knowledge to the “Advisory Board for Historical Regional Studies in Hesse” since 2005.

On November 30, 2009 Katharina Krause was elected President of the University of Marburg. She has been the head of the university since February 18, 2010. She is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen .
