Say of the Turkish chains
The legend on which the municipality's coat of arms is based is that of the Turkish chains. Allegedly two people from Merzen once took part in a crusade to the Holy Land. They were captured by the Turks and sentenced to death. On their last night they prayed that they would hear the bells of their homeland one last time. They fell asleep and miraculously woke up the next morning on the Juckelsboll, a small hill near the Merzen church , to the bell for the morning service. Their chains were hung in the house of God as evidence of the miracle. They were stolen in the 1970s, but the community has a replica. They can be seen in the local coat of arms. On the Juckelsboll there is a board on which you can read the legend of the Turkish chains in rhyming form:
800 years ago at this legendary place / the miracle of the Turkish chains took place. / Two Merzeners were on a crusade / fighting for the faith in holy lands / Captured by Turks, they asked to honor God / to hear the home bells again ./ What a miracle when they woke up in the morning / they found themselves safe on the Juckelsboll./
