history

In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the area of today's Neuenkirchen-Vörden was the bone of contention for numerous disputes between the monasteries of Osnabrück and Münster . A definition of the border between Neuenkirchen and Vörden, which lasted until the municipal reform in 1974, was made between the Kingdom of Hanover and the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg as part of the definition of the common border between the two principalities on February 4, 1817.

History of Neuenkirchen

Neuenkirchen was probably founded in the 11th century. The parish of Neuenkirchen is said to have been established in 1159 as a subsidiary parish of the parish of Damme. The parish of Neuenkirchen was first recorded in 1221. Until 1391 Vörden belonged to the parish of Neuenkirchen. This year the place was parish off .

Although the Counter-Reformation was generally successful in the Niederstift Münster in the 17th century (with the result that all non-aristocratic subjects of the Prince-Bishop and many of the aristocrats became Catholics), one was able to continue in Neuenkirchen in the 17th century and in the following centuries until today Evangelical Lutheran parish secure their continued existence. During the Thirty Years' War three Catholic priests were expelled from Neuenkirchen. In 1651, the Jesuits established a Simultaneum in Neuenkirchen , which provided for the parish church to be used jointly by Catholics and Protestants.

The Neuenkirchen church was used as a simultaneous church until 1889. In 1902 it was demolished; the Protestant parish received a new church building with the Apostle Church, the Catholic parish with the Bonifatius Church .

By resolution of the Congress of Vienna , Neuenkirchen became part of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg in 1815 , which in 1918 became part of the State of Oldenburg , which lasted until 1946. Together with the state of Hanover , to which Vörden belonged at the time, the state of Oldenburg merged in 1946 to form the new state of Lower Saxony.

History of Vördens

There were already settlements in Hinnenkamp and Hörsten during the Saxon period . The villages belonged to the Saxon Dersagau . From the year 785 there is a record of Charlemagne's military campaign in the area, which is said to have led to considerable devastation. The first written mention of Vörden dates back to 1341. In Vörden, a monastery castle was built in the 14th century.

From 1643, the illegitimate son of the Swedish King Gustav Adolf , Gustav Gustavson , resided at Vörden Castle for seven years before he moved to his new residence in the Wildeshausen office and died there in 1654. From the then Protestant Vörden, he negotiated in the Peace of Westphalia (1648), which he concluded, at Osnabrück and Münster with the Spanish party. The Count of Wasaburg, as Gustav Gustavson called himself since 1637, is the most important personality in local history. Shortly after the end of the Thirty Years' War (from 1651), the parish church ( called St. Christophorus in Vörden ) was used as a simultaneous church by both Protestants and Catholics in the village , as in Neuenkirchen . That only changed after a church fire in 1842, which completely destroyed the building. After that, each denomination built its own church.

Vörden was the seat of an office in the Prince Diocese of Osnabrück . After its demise, the official seat was moved to Malgarten in 1819 . In return, Vörden became the seat of the Hanover Forest Inspectorate in 1820 (until 1854). In the 19th century the place belonged to the Kingdom of Hanover and from 1866 to 23 August 1946 to Prussia . After Prussia was broken up in August 1946, Vörden was part of the state of Hanover until October 31, 1946. Since November 1, 1946, it has belonged to the state of Lower Saxony.

From 1867 Vörden belonged to the district of Bersenbrück , which was incorporated into the district of Osnabrück on July 1, 1972 . With the territorial reform in 1974, Vörden was incorporated into the district of Vechta together with the two communities Hinnenkamp and Hörsten from the district of Osnabrück and incorporated into the community of Neuenkirchen. The Lower Saxony “Law to reorganize the city of Aschendorf and the communities Langförden, Vörden and Mulsum” of March 28, 1990, which was supposed to restore the independence of the municipality of Vörden, did not come into force by order of the Federal Constitutional Court .

In the times of the Cold War, one was in Vörden 1964-1987 FlaRak position of a Dutch guided anti-aircraft missiles battalion stationed with the missiles with nuclear warheads type Nike Hercules could be fired. The military facility was named Willem-Versteegh-Kamp . In 1988 the Dutch base was closed.

Incorporations

On March 1, 1974, the communities Hinnenkamp, Hörsten and Vörden from the district of Osnabrück (all in the district of Bersenbrück until 1972 ) were incorporated into the former community of Neuenkirchen (Oldenburg).

The majority of the citizens of the village of Vörden wanted the village to remain as a municipality in the Osnabrück district , but this was denied to the village. This decision was upheld by the Federal Constitutional Court in 1992. Thereupon the community Neuenkirchen (Oldenburg), to which Vörden belonged, was renamed "Neuenkirchen-Vörden" at the request of the local council by the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior with effect from October 1, 1993, in order to show the equality of both parts of the community and around them by numerous communities of the same name to be able to differentiate better in Germany.

Severe weather disaster on 16./17. August 1974

On the night of August 16-17, 1974, the community of Neuenkirchen-Vörden and the neighboring communities were hit by an eight-hour continuous thunderstorm. Hailstones up to the size of billiard balls fell and caused millions of euros in damage.

Due to the activity of the Neuenkirchen-Vörden e. V. the musical groups in Neuenkirchen-Vörden have hardly any problems with young talent.

Buildings

The renovated station building functions as a "culture station", where various cultural events take place regularly.

The old castle of the Swede Gustav Gustavson stands in the middle of the district Vörden and together with the Catholic Church St. Paulus Apostel and the Kindergarten St. Paulus form the church district.

Museums

The former farm citizens' house (Stockmanns Haus) was restored true to the original in 1997 by dedicated homeland friends. Most of the timber used in the framework comes from the time it was built. The infills are newly bricked. In the inscription above the hall gate, the date of construction is April 8th, 1843. Two old clay infills have been preserved in the expanded hall. The open hearth with old sandstones and tiles can warm the whole building in the winter months. An old shoemaker's workshop has been rebuilt on the upper floor. In addition, sights of historical living culture are presented. The farm house is surrounded by a small garden. Tools for cutting peat are shown on the outer barn wall.

Also noteworthy are the remains of the Wasa Castle in Vörden, now used as a Catholic church, rectory and Nils-Stensen-Haus (formerly the Count's stables). The former slaughterhouse of the Möller family was converted into a slaughterhouse museum by the Heimatverein .

Windmill

Neuenkirchen has been connected to the Lower Saxony Mühlenstrasse since 2008 . You can visit the gallery Dutch windmill "Selingsmühle" on Hakenstrasse, built in 1824 and almost completely renovated in 2010 .

Viewpoints

The Steigenberg observation tower near Wahlde, built in 1972 under the supervision of the architect and master carpenter Josef Lahrmann († 1998) and with the help of the 3rd Company of Pioneer Battalion II of the Bundeswehr , is 2 km east of Neuenkirchen north of the road to Damme and immediately east of the A 1 . From its observation platform, the view fell into the Osnabrück region and the Wiehen Mountains until 2015 . Since then, the tower has been closed due to dilapidation. No decision has yet been made about its future.

South of the same street in Severinghausen there is a lookout point on the Dreesberg, the platform of which is only a few steps above the site. Nevertheless, when the visibility is good, this vantage point offers a distant view of 50 km to the Ibbenbüren power plant in an easterly, south and west direction , as there are extensive fields and pastures here on the southern slope of the Damme mountains.

Sports

The Naturerlebnisbad Vörden (Naturbad Vörden) was built by a voluntary association after the old outdoor pool was closed. It has a total water surface of about 3,100 m². The regeneration area (village pond) has an area of around 1,500 m², which the Neuenkirchen-Vörden community was responsible for. The water surface with a size of 1,600 m² is completely available for bathing. This means a tripling of the previous bathing area. This made it possible to provide a 50 m long swimming lane. The deepest point measures 3.60 m. Parts of the existing pool body were built over with wooden walkways and thus integrated into the natural pool.

Other areas of the pool walls were demolished and attached by generously graveled shallow water areas. The concept is based on the use of natural materials such as gravel, sand, natural stone and wood and gives the impression of a natural water landscape. The pool water passes through overflow channels into a pump shaft and compensation tank, from where it is pumped directly through the filter substrate (gravel layer) into the regeneration area by means of suction and pressure drainage. From the equalization shaft of the regeneration area, the purified water returns to the bathing area (closed water circuit).

The natural swimming pool Vörden is sponsored by the association “Naturbad Vörden e. V. “is maintained and operated. The community of Neuenkirchen-Vörden supports the natural swimming pool annually with a fixed grant. Nonetheless, the financial burden on the community from the bathroom has been reduced to a third of the previous costs. Membership in the association “Naturbad Vörden e. V. “includes an annual ticket for the natural pool. Members can access the pool via a modern biometric access system.

There are other sports clubs in Neuenkirchen-Vörden. In the Neuenkirchen district, the sporting offer is largely covered by the TuS Neuenkirchen. In addition to football, basketball and volleyball, senior sports are also offered there. In the district of Vörden, the sporting offer is spread over several clubs.

At BS Vörden only football is offered, while TV Vörden offers other fields of activity in addition to the main sport of basketball. The area of sports acrobatics is currently particularly successful here.

The TTC Campemoor offers table tennis. The Neuenkirchen-Vörden tennis club is the only sports club that is organized across districts. Equestrian sport is practiced in the community in the driving and riding club Neuenkirchen and in the riding and driving club Vörden.

For the 2015/16 season, TuS Neuenkirchen and BS Vörden have come together to form a syndicate in the youth sector. In the A to C youth division, the teams start as SG Neuenkirchen-Vörden. In basketball, too, there is now a collaboration between TuS Neuenkirchen and TV Vörden.

education

The Neuenkirchen-Vörden community is the school authority for the elementary schools in Neuenkirchen and Vörden as well as the Neuenkirchen-Vörden secondary school.

The Neuenkirchen elementary school is currently run in three classes and has an affiliated school kindergarten. The primary school in Vörden is run in two classes. Both school buildings were expanded to include classrooms and specialist teaching rooms in 2001 and 2002.

The Oberschule Neuenkirchen-Vörden celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2009. Before the school was set up, the children from the community attended secondary schools in the neighboring town of Damme. However, after the school there burned down, a secondary school with an orientation level was set up in Neuenkirchen in 1984. The increased number of pupils and the establishment of a 10th grade at the secondary school led to several expansion measures (two classrooms and a music room in 1991, four classrooms, two group rooms, toilets and a lift in 1994). After the Weser-Ems district government approved the introduction of a combined secondary and secondary school with an orientation level in 1994, the development of the secondary school branch began. In 1996, the school building had to be expanded by six classrooms. In 1998, the teacher's house on the school premises was converted into two specialist classrooms for art and technology. In 2000 the staff room was expanded and in 2002 the school's break hall was enlarged. In line with the school anniversary, the toilet facility was renovated in 2009 and provided with a vestibule. The technical classrooms for science classes were also refurbished that year using funds from the economic stimulus package. In 2010, the housekeeping area (teaching and learning kitchen) was refurbished.

In 2011 the school was converted into the new school form Oberschule (with all-day lessons on two days of the week). In 2014 a newly built cafeteria was put into operation. An extension was completed at the start of the 2017/18 school year. A workshop and technical room as well as three classrooms and two group rooms were also built there. The area of the old workshop is being converted into a specialist room for art lessons.
