The big brawl (also: Little, let the rags fly , English Battle Creek Brawl or The Big Brawl ) is a martial arts film filmed in the USA in 1980 with Jackie Chan in the lead role. Directed by Robert Clouse , who landed a big hit in the USA in 1973 with Enter the Dragon .

action

Jerry Kwan (Jackie Chan), a Chinese man living in the United States in the 1930s, is also an excellent kung fu fighter. In order to raise money for his brother's private clinic, he wants to take part in the annual beating spectacle in the small Texas town of Battle Creek and win the prize money.

But when the Mafia from his martial arts learns the criminals kidnap his brother's girlfriend to Jerry at this year's Battle Creek Brawl, the big brawl fight for themselves to have and their great adversary, the Boxer Kiss off. Jerry succeeds in the episode to prevail against all opponents and to save the friend of the brother.

criticism

"A technically perfect film that carefully reconstructs the decor of the thirties, but seeks its entertainment value solely in the depiction of physical violence."

Remarks

  • The film was intended to help Jackie Chan break into the important American market; it was his first Hollywood production. However, the film failed to achieve this goal, as did its subsequent attempts in the 1980s.
  • The biggest mistake of the producers, in the opinion of the critics, was not to employ Jackie Chan as stunt coordinator, who had already played this role in his Hong Kong films for over 10 years, but rather the American Pat Johnson . This then also shaped the rather sedate style of the American stuntmen in contrast to Hong Kong productions.
  • Highlights of the film are a roller skating competition and Chan's liberation campaign in a cinema.
