Robert Clouse (born March 6, 1928 in Wisconsin , † February 4, 1997 in Ashland , Oregon ) was an American film director , screenwriter and producer .

Life

Robert Clouse was the director of the film The Man with the Death Claw in 1973 . Here Bruce Lee acted for the first time in a full-length film that was filmed in English for a western audience.

Because of the great and lasting impact of this flick, he subsequently received many similar assignments, although there were doubts that Robert Clouse really liked shooting with martial artists. The following year he worked as the director of a film called "Black Belt Jones", which starred the karateka Jim Kelly known from "The Man with the Death Claw" in the lead role.

For the producer Raymond Chow , he also took on the available material for Bruce Lee's unfinished film Bruce Lee - My Last Struggle . The result found its way into the cinemas in 1978 after Robert Clouse shot additional scenes with various Lee doubles. The film was received ambiguously, but it makes it possible for fans to see many authentic shots of the late Bruce Lee on the screen for the first time.

For Jackie Chan , too , Robert Clouse was the first director with whom he made a western film. The script for The Great Brawl (1980) was also from Robert Clouse. It also featured the mix of acrobatics and humor typical of Jackie Chan, which finally brought him his breakthrough in the West in 1994 (after the relatively humorless Der Protektor in 1985) with Rumble in the Bronx .

In 1984 he was one of the directors of the television series The Ninja Master with Lee van Cleef . The title character was on the run from a ninja named "Okasa", who was played by Sho Kosugi . Sho Kosugi became known in the West as a ninja actor and had great success here with his ninja films.

After this foray into television, Robert Clouse returned to the cinema. Twice he had Cynthia Rothrock play China O'Brian , where he was also instrumental in the scripts.

In the year of his death, he first directed a film called Ironheart (with Bolo Yeung and Richard Norton ). But he did not finish this work.
