background
Capitol Records confirmed to Billboard magazine on September 13, 2011 that The One That Got Away would become Perry's sixth single. The decision arose out of Perry's fondness for the song, because in her opinion it has a catchy hookline and could be a huge hit on pop radios. The record company sent The One That Got Away to all mainstream radio stations on September 28, 2011 .
Perry said in a statement from the label:
“I'm so happy that we made 'The One That Got Away' my sixth single, because this song shows a very different side of me that I didn't show with the previous singles on this record. I think everyone can identify with this song. I wrote about what it's like when you promise to stay with someone forever, but you end up unable to. It's a bittersweet story. "
Remix versions
An official remix version of the song starring US rapper BoB was released in the United States in December 2011. Katy Perry released a remixed version to make The One That Got Away even more popular and her sixth number one hit from an album. That would have overtaken Michael Jackson and become the sole record holder. Perry's plan to release a remixed version of the song and to lower the sales price of the song so that it reached number one on the charts was heavily criticized. Perry's hits ET with Kanye West and Last Friday Night (TGIF) with Missy Elliott only peaked after the remixed versions were released. The Billboard magazine discussed the need for his readers to make changes to the charts rules. Some readers suggested that price cuts and remix versions should no longer affect the success of a song. Perry's method of remixed versions and price cuts were already used by other artists such as Rihanna and Britney Spears , who have already achieved numerous number one hits.
