action

The action takes place in a dystopian future in 2012. After a worldwide, unspecified catastrophe that wiped out most of the world's population, the few survivors in New York are fighting with primitive weapons for drinking water and food. The former metropolis is contaminated, the cultivation of useful plants is impossible. The remaining people are also divided into different camps. Armed conflicts between the mutually hostile groups are the order of the day.

One of the local groups, the Peaceful Commune , is headed by an elderly man who his people simply call "Baron". The charismatic leader ensures the necessary cohesion. In addition, he devotedly takes care of the interests of the community, which is characterized by selfishness and discord. In the tough struggle for survival, the commune has another important character alongside Baron, the former scientist Cal. This succeeds in obtaining resilient seeds for the cultivation of edible vegetables in the infertile soil. For lack of suitable cultivation space, Cal planted his vegetable garden on the roofs of the fortified refuge.

The vegetables soon arouse desires in the rival street gang, led by the brutal Carrot, who initially behave passively and remain in their own neighborhood. Carrot's gang poses a significant threat to the community. As the community needs more protection, Baron enlists the bald-headed, vagabond thug Carson. The mere presence of the stranger who opposes the opponent with a knife initially achieves the desired effect. The number of daily raids is decreasing, although the threat posed by Carrot's henchmen persists. Baron concludes that the Commune has no long-term future in New York. He asks Carson to bring Cal with the seeds he has already won and his heavily pregnant daughter Melinda to safety - to an island off the coast of North Carolina .

When the situation of the community changes permanently due to internal quarrels and Cal is murdered by Carrot's people, Baron asks the courageous Carson to leave immediately with the seeds and the drugged Melinda. The two escape through New York's underground utility network while Baron tries in vain to calm the angry community. A little later, the head is murdered by an angry mob of once loyal followers. Meanwhile, Carrot follows with his minions Carson and Melinda through the deserted subway shafts of the metropolis. On the way, Melinda gives birth to a healthy son. In the end there is a bloody duel between Carson and Carrot, which Carson can win, although he loses his left hand in the process.
