Duane Peters (* 12. June 1961 in Anaheim , California ) is an American professional skateboarder , punk rock - Composer and singer .

Life and skateboarding career

Duane Peters was one of the most successful newcomers in the then rapidly growing skateboard scene as early as the 1970s. Not only because of the multitude of tricks he invented, but also with his fast and aggressive skate style, he became one of the most influential skateboarders in the 1980s.

Peters was one of the first skateboarders to deviate from general trends in the 1970s. At that time either jeans or short sports shorts and long socks (70s style) were common, but Peters wore cut and torn jeans and not the usual branded T-shirts, but skull motifs. He brought punk rock to the skate scene very early on. Peters cut off his long hair and dyed it, once wore a mohawk (mohawk haircut) or, on another occasion, had very short hair. Peters influenced not only the style, but also the music; He brought his own cassettes with music from Black Flag or similar bands to the contests and asked that this music should be played during his run.

Peters is known for inventing a variety of skateboarding tricks and moves. These include: Acid Drop into a Pool, Layback Roll-Out, Indy Air, Sweeper, Backside Layback Roll-Out Revert, Fakie Hang Up (Disaster), Invert Revert and Fakie Thruster. Together with Neil Blender , he modified the once static footplant into a dynamic fastplant. He often invented most of his tricks at a contest; To outdo his competitors, he varied some of the usual tricks and thus invented new ones. He was also the first skateboarder to perform a loop. For this purpose, a ramp was built with a subsequent looping. Peters made several attempts, all of which were filmed. When it came to the real loop, the cameraman had to change the film cassette. The only completed loop was only photographed and not filmed.

Peters first came into contact with drugs at the age of 16. After falling while skating, his left arm was broken in such a complicated way that the doctors had to fight for him for days. An amputation was briefly considered . Finally the arm could be saved. However, the high morphine-containing drugs left traces on Peters. More and more often he tried harder drugs. In the early 80s Peters went to San Francisco , where he became a member of one of the then skate gangs called "The Jaks". There he came into intensive contact with alcohol and other drugs. The 80s were marked by intensive drug use. Peters continued to compete, but soon fell behind due to newcomers to the scene such as Tony Hawk , Steve Caballero , Mike McGill and Lance Mountain . Peters had a girlfriend at the time, with whom he had two children. Since he was heavily dependent on alcohol and other drugs and his girlfriend because of credit card fraud imprisonment had to serve, both sons of the welfare handed over to care of the grandparents of his then-girlfriend - Peters allowed his children not to see more. In the early 1990s, Peters was so addicted to drugs that he was taken to the emergency room twice as clinically dead. The doctors each managed to bring Peters back to life.

Peters reappeared on the scene in the mid-90s. He got a promodle from Beer City Skateboards . Peters was granted access to his children again, and a very close relationship developed. At the end of the 90s he was to be found at many skateboard contests, where he mostly rode in the veteran class with colleagues from old times like Dave Duncan , Jay Adams or Salba .

In 2004 Peters married his bandmate Corey Parks . Also in 2004 she gave birth to their son Clash Thomas Peters. The birth of his son moved Peters to reduce his drug use. He tried repeatedly to withdraw, but kept relapsing.

Another reason for his relapse was the accidental death of his son Chess from his first relationship in 2007. The relapse was so severe that an entire tour of his band "The Hunns" had to be canceled.

Today, Peters is a pro team rider for Pocket Pistols Skates (a subsidiary of Black Label Skateboards). Black Label released a cinematic biography of Peters in 2005: Who Cares: The Duane Peters Story .

Music career

In 1993 he founded the punk band US Bombs with Kerry Martinez , where Peters works as a singer and lyricist. This was followed by some smaller projects such as Political Crap, Duane Peters Gunfight and Exploding Fuckdolls.

In 2000 Peters founded the band "The Hunns" with Rob Milucky, in which he is also active as a singer and composer. The remarkable thing about "The Hunns" was that the band released three full albums in just two years.

In 2002 at a concert with "The Damned" Peters met his future wife Corey Parks, who had just left their band "Nashville Pussy". Parks joined "The Hunns" as a bassist. Shortly thereafter, the band changed the name to "Die Hunns" and recorded the album "Long Legs". Duane Peters also runs his own record label under the name "Disaster Records"

Others

Duane Peters is known for his striking looks. He is tattooed all over his body and he is missing his front incisors .

Duane Peters has been running his own fashion label under the name "DISASTR77" for several years. The fashion and motifs are reminiscent of the punk rock fashion of the 1970s, especially of 1977. In addition to t-shirts with self-designed motifs, there are limited editions of art prints that are made by skateboarders such as B. Jason Admas . In 2009 he designed a limited edition of the classic "Police & Thieves" for the southern California sunglasses manufacturer Tres Noir. The nickname of Duane Peters is "Master of Disaster" (Lord of Disaster), this is reflected e.g. B. in the name of his record label (Disaster Records) or in the name of his fashion label DISASTR77.
