Marie Wilson (born Katherine Elizabeth Wilson on August 19, 1916 in Anaheim , California , † November 23, 1972 in Hollywood , California) was an American actress .

life and career

After the early death of her father, Marie Wilson was the main breadwinner of her family and took on her first smaller film roles from 1933. Ultimately, Wilson was signed to Warner Brothers , where she played the role of the "stupid blonde" in many films for comedic purposes. Until the 1960s she played characters of this type in movies, radio shows and on stage - so successfully that she almost always had secure jobs. Her early films include William Dieterle's Satan Met a Lady (1936) with Bette Davis and Boy Meets Girl (1938) alongside James Cagney and Pat O'Brien .

By far her best-known role was played by Wilson in the late 1940s in the radio comedy My Friend Irma , in which she lent her voice to the title character of the somewhat bumbling but lovable stenographer Irma . In 1949 and 1950 she also took on the role of Irma in the two comedies My Friend Irma and My Friend Irma Goes West , in which the later world-famous comedian duo Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made their first film appearances in supporting roles. Between 1952 and 1954 Wilson played the role of Irma again in a television series produced by CBS . In 1962 she made her last appearance in the cinema with a supporting role in Henry Koster's comedy Mr. Hobbs is on vacation , after which she could still be seen in several television series until the year she died.

Marie Wilson received three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the categories of film , television and radio . She was married to actor Allan Nixon (1915–1995) from 1942 until her divorce in 1950, then from 1951 until her death with actor and producer Robert Fallon († 1995). Marie Wilson died of cancer in 1972 at the age of 56.
