A Matter of Life and Death ( English for: "A matter of life and death") is the 14th studio album by the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden . It was released on August 25, 2006 in Europe and on September 5 in the USA. The album is produced by Kevin Shirley. Like the previous album Dance of Death , it was recorded in the Sarm West Studios in London . A subsequent world tour started on October 4th, 2006 at the New England Dodge Music Center - Hartford, USA.

background

Iron Maiden stayed true to the striking line and also released songs with a concrete historical background on A Matter of Life and Death , whereby the contemporary themes of war and conflicts shape the album. These Colors Don't Run describes the impressions of soldiers in war zones. Brighter Than a Thousand Suns refers to the first atomic bomb , which was described by scientists who were present at the explosion as "brighter than a thousand suns". With The Longest Day Iron Maiden delivered another song with a historical background. The Americans' Operation Overlord in June 1944 and the accompanying assault on Omaha Beach are discussed here.

On August 10, 2006, Different World appeared on the website, where later Brighter Than a Thousand Suns was also presented.

The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg

The first single on the album was The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg . This was released before the album on August 11, 2006 and was made available in advance as a video clip on the band's homepage. In addition to the title song, the single also contained Hallowed Be Thy Name from a radio session for the British broadcaster BBC . There was also a 10-inch limited edition that contained the songs The Trooper and Run to the Hills from that same session.

  2. Hallowed Be Thy Name (Radio 1 Legends Session) - 7:07

Different world

Different World was the second single on the album. It appeared in five versions. The US and European versions differ in the attached songs. The US version contains two songs from the Radio One sessions, while the European version contains the song Iron Maiden in a live version from Copenhagen 2006. In addition, a version was in Europe DVD releases, this includes a focus - cover version called Hocus Pocus and as a live song by the Copenhagen show The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg . A digital version of the single includes an interview with Steve Harris. A 7-inch version was also released as a picture disc .

successes

With A Matter of Life and Death , the band reached number 1 in the German media control charts for albums for the first time and, with 56,000 CDs sold, made it to number 9 in the top 10 of the US album charts.

On October 2, 2006, EMI in Finland announced the album's platinum status . This required 30,000 records to be sold.

Different World was particularly successful in the singles for the album in Great Britain, where the song with number 3 in the charts was the greatest success since Be Quick or Be Dead from 1992 (album Fear of the Dark ). In Germany, however, this single only reached no more than 39th place, but stayed in the top 100 for six weeks. The Different World single, which was released in Germany much later than the album, reached number 40 again and stayed in the top 100 for five weeks.

Trivia

With A Matter of Life and Death , after Piece of Mind , The X Factor and Virtual XI, there are now four studio albums by the band that were not named after a title on them.

The title The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg raises the question of who Benjamin Breeg is. Close to the publication of A Matter of Life and Death , a website - apparently operated by his relative A. Breeg - went online describing his life: an artist from East London who mysteriously disappeared in 1978. This initially led to speculation among fans. On closer inspection, one finds that much of his life is allusions to Iron Maiden songs, their band history, or personal characteristics of members. So he is z. B. Born on the day the British declared war on Germany, one of his paintings looks similar to the mascot Eddie, he had nightmares in his childhood like Steve Harris and disappeared shortly before the Soundhouse tapes were released. It is assumed that this website was made as a joke by Iron Maiden himself, and Benjamin Breeg is fictional.
