Live After Death (English for: 'Lebendig nach dem Tod', a play on words with 'Life After Death' = 'life after death') is the first live album by the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden . The album was released on October 14, 1985 via EMI . The All Music Guide counts it among the best live albums in the metal genre.
Emergence
The first twelve songs and the intro were recorded on March 14th and 17th, 1985 at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach , California . The remaining five songs were recorded on October 8, 9, 10 and 12, 1984 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London ( Great Britain ). The performances were part of the World Slavery Tour following the release of the Powerslave album .
On the original double LP, the songs recorded in Long Beach are on the first three pages and the songs recorded in London are on the fourth page. Five songs were originally sung by Paul Di'Anno . A total of only seven songs from the current line-up at the time were also recorded in the studio version.
Martin Birch mixed the album while Iron Maiden was on tour in the USA. Individual songs were sent to the band by airmail, they wrote “Yes” or “No” on the box and sent them back. The album does not contain any overdubs .
Cover artwork
The cover shows band mascot Eddie as he just climbs out of his grave. On the headstone is a quote from HP Lovecraft :
"That is not dead which can eternal lie / Yet with strange aeons even death may die."
"It is not dead that which can lie (lie) forever, and in strange ages even death may die."
Eddie's last name is obscured by a lump of dirt. Only Edward T. H is recognizable . His full name is Edward the Head .
Publications
In December 1985 the album was released on CD . To save space, only the songs from Long Beach were used. Further, Running Free shortened from 8:43 minutes to 3:16 minutes. Only the re-release in 1998, a double CD, contains the songs recorded in London. During this re-release, the gaps between some songs were also filled in with audience noise. The intro can also be selected individually for the re-release.
Live After Death has also been released as a VHS video. For this, however, a concert in Long Beach was recorded on another evening. The video contains a complete concert. The last song of the evening ( Sanctuary ) is neither on the LP nor on the CD version. On February 1, 2008, Live After Death was released as a double DVD set. The first DVD contains the concert from the Long Beach Arena, the second includes the second part of the Iron Maiden History, the concert documentary Behind the Iron Curtain , eight songs from Rock in Rio '85 and a live recording from 'Ello Texas contain.

Song information
Some songs on Live After Death are played very rarely or not at all at concerts today. The intro is the famous " We Shall Fight on the Beaches " speech by Winston Churchill on June 4, 1940 in the House of Commons . The following song, Aces High, deals with the so-called Battle of Britain , which occurred a little later.
Before the song Revelations , Bruce Dickinson says "Nice to see you, to see you is nice", a quote from British entertainer Bruce Forsyth . This catch phrase was used by Forsyth as a greeting on the TV show The Generation Game .

With Running Free and Run to the Hills two singles were released. In 1990 both singles were released on an EP together with the track Listen With Nicko! Part VII released as part of The First Ten Years series. A 1995 re-release of Live After Death includes all of the B-sides except Sanctuary .
Running Free
The single was released on September 23, 1985. Running Free is one of the few Iron Maiden releases that doesn't feature Eddie as the title theme. Instead, there is a live image of the Hammersmith Odeon Show by photographer Ross Halfin on the cover. The B-sides are the non-album tracks Sanctuary and Murders in the Rue Morgue . The former is from the show at Long Beach Arena, the latter from the show at Hammersmith Odeon. The single reached number 19 on the UK charts.
