Brave New World ( English for Brave New World ) is the twelfth studio album of the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden . It was released on May 30, 2000 via EMI .

background

Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith returned to Iron Maiden on February 10, 1999 . Dickinson replaced his former successor Blaze Bayley , guitarist Janick Gers remained loyal to the group. Since then, Iron Maiden have been playing with three guitarists. The tour that followed became a commercial triumph. The expectations of the band's Quasi- Reunion album were very high.

The album was composed in Portugal before the Ed Hunter tour in spring 1999 and recorded after this tour in autumn 1999 at the Guillaume Tell Studios in Paris. Kevin Shirley was the new producer and Steve Harris was co-producer.

The song material was musically linked to the Virtual XI album, so it was a mixture of catchy songs like The Wicker Man , The Mercenary and The Fallen Angel , as well as long, multi-part titles like Dream of Mirrors or The Nomad . Part of the songs you can hear that they were originally conceived as singers for Blaze Bayley, which can be seen in the fact that The Mercenary , Dream of Mirrors , The Nomad and in parts Blood Brothers were already composed in 1998 (an acoustic version of Blood Brothers with Blaze Bayley was recorded as singer for the 2016 album Nylon Maiden: Preserved in Time by Thomas Zwijsen). Since The Mercenary and Dream of Mirrors , in which Janick Gers was involved, found no use for Virtual XI, he was only involved in one song on this album, Como Estais Amigos , but then worked on four tracks on Brave New World. With this album and the more progressive orientation, Iron Maiden was able to win over new fans from the progressive metal camp.

Song information

  • The Wicker Man refers to a 1973 film of the same name with Christopher Lee .
  • The album title and the theme song refer to the novel of the same name by Aldous Huxley .
  • Blood Brothers is a personal song about Steve Harris' relationship with his late father.
  • The Mercenary is about soldiers fighting for survival in the jungle.
  • Dream of Mirrors is about nightmares and the fear of sleep. The song uses lyrics from the song Infinite Dreams from the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son album.
  • The Fallen Angel is about the demon Azazel .
  • The Nomad is about people who live in the desert. Parts of the music were taken from the Beckett group 's song Life's Shadow and adapted to the Maiden style. Parts of the lyrics of Life's Shadow come from the older Maiden song Hallowed Be Thy Name (from the album The Number of the Beast ).
  • Out of the Silent Planet was inspired by the movie Alarm in Space . As was initially suspected, the song has nothing to do with the novel of the same name by CS Lewis (German title: Beyond the Silent Star ).

The album reached number 3 in the charts in Germany and stayed in the top 10 for three weeks. The German magazine Visions had the album in their list of the 66 + 6 best metal albums of the third millennium in spring 2017.
