Shvpes (spoken: Shapes ) was an English melodic hardcore band from Birmingham .

history

Cytota (2009 to 2014)

The band was founded in 2009 under the name Cytota . On Halloween , singer Joby Fitzgerald and drummer Harry Jennings met in London and decided to form a band. The line-up was completed by guitarists Ryan Hamilton and Youssef Ashraf and bassist Oliver Pike. Under this name, the band released the EP The Prosecutor in 2012 , which was produced by Jim Pinder and Carl Bown. A year later, the band performed at the Download Festival and played concerts supporting bands like Funeral for a Friend , While She Sleeps , and Rise to Remain . In July 2014, singer Joby Fitzpatrick left the band due to musical differences. He was succeeded by Griffin Dickinson. He is the son of Bruce Dickinson , the singer for Iron Maiden .

Shvpes (2015 to 2020)

In January 2015 the band changed their name to Shvpes. The new name comes from the song Shapes , the first composition with Dickinson as the singer. According to Griffin Dickinson, the a was replaced by a v, as the band would be easier to find under this spelling on Google and YouTube . In addition, this spelling is a homage to hip-hop , as many artists in this field replace letters with others. In summer 2015 the band performed at the Slam Dunk Festival and then worked on their first studio album. After another appearance at the Download Festival 2016, Shvpes released their debut album Pain on Spinefarm Records in October 2016 . Joy. Ecstasy. Despair. This was followed by a tour in the opening act for Crossfaith .

In spring 2017 Shvpes played two European tours in support of Trivium and While She Sleeps, respectively, before playing at the Graspop Metal Meeting , Hellfest and Slam Dunk Festival in summer 2017 . In 2018 the band performed at the Download Festival and the Reading and Leeds Festivals . After touring the UK in support of Hawthorne Heights , the band released their second studio album Greater Than on November 9, 2018 , produced by Jim Pinder. The Trivium singer Matthew Heafy appears as a guest singer on the song Rain . At the same time Shvpes played a European tour in the opening act for Bullet for My Valentine . In July 2020, Shvpes disbanded.

style

While the band under their old name Cytota were still more in metalcore or post-hardcore , the band changed their style after the renaming to melodic hardcore , which is enriched with influences from metal , alternative rock and hip-hop. Marcus Schleutermann from the German magazine Rock Hard described Shvpes as a "modern version of Papa Roach ", supplemented by "melodic metalcore, handmade hip-hop and a pinch of funk ".
