While She Sleeps is a British metalcore - band from Sheffield .

The group is currently under contract with Shock Records ( Australia ), Good Fight Music ( United States ) and Search and Destroy Records ( United Kingdom ). With the release of the debut EP "The North Stands for Nothing", which was reissued several times, the group was able to gain a lot of attention in their home country.

While She Sleeps have already played at Rock am Ring , Rock im Park , the Sonisphere Festival and the Download Festival . In 2012 the group was able to join the Kerrang! Winning awards in the “Best British Newcomer” category and was nominated in the “Breakthrough Artist” category at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards . The debut album "This Is the Six" was released in August and hit the top 40 of the UK charts straight away.

Foundation and The North Stands for Nothing (2006–2011)

The group While She Sleeps was founded in 2006 by singer Jordan Widdowson, drummer Adam Savage, bassist Aaran McKanzie, and guitarists Sean Long and Mat Welsh. The musicians previously played in several bands. In 2009, after having played several shows, the musicians decided to concentrate completely on the band. At this point, Widdowson left the group due to work difficulties. After the group found a new singer in Lawrence Taylor, the group began working on the EP "The North Stands for Nothing". The group toured the UK from late 2009 to 2010. 2010 While She Sleeps played for the first time at the Sonisphere Festival . In October the group signed to Good Fight Music , which distributes the band's items in the United States .

The group released their debut EP in July 2010 with "The North Stands for Nothing", which was released via Small Town Records (including Fei Comodo ) and Good Fight Music (including Madball , Funeral for a Friend , This or the Apocalypse , The Chariot and Fit for an Autopsy ) was produced and distributed. In the US the EP was released on November 23, 2010, in Japan on December 22, 2010 via Doom Patrol . A re-release in the USA took place on July 26, 2011. In Australia , the EP was released on December 9, 2011 via Shock Records . Small Town Records released the EP on February 20, 2012 on vinyl .

With the release of the EP and extensive tours of the United Kingdom , the group received attention in the national media and from various music labels . On February 15, 2011, the group played a gig at Maida Vale Studios for BBC Radio 1 . On March 15, 2011, the non-album single "Be (lie) ve" was released via Good Fight Music. On May 4th the group opened for Bring Me the Horizon and Parkway Drive at the O2 Academy in Sheffield . The group was invited by Bring Me the Horizon to play as a support band on the US tour. However, the group had to cancel this due to entry problems. In October 2011 the group played their first headlining tour of the UK and Europe with Bury Tomorrow and Feed the Rhino . While She Sleeps toured with Adept , Shadows Chasing Ghosts , Fei Comodo , Betraying the Martyrs and Upon This Dawning . In 2011 the group played at the Sonisphere Festival.

This Is the Six (2011-2013)

In November 2011, the group began working on their debut album together with producer Carl Brown. The drums were recorded at Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire . The rest of the work took place in the Treehouse Studios in Chesterfield . After the recording work was finished, the group played on the “Kerrang! Tour ”together with Sum 41 , New Found Glory , The Blackout and letlive . In March 2012 it was announced that the debut album would be released via Search and Destroy Records . In April the British magazine Kerrang! announced that the album, which was to be called This Is the Six , would be released in August 2012. The first single of the same name, This Is the Six , was released in May 2012 .

The group played at Rock am Ring ( Nürburgring ) and Rock im Park ( Nuremberg ) in mid-2012 . The group also played at the download festival . That same month, While She Sleeps won the Kerrang! Awards in the “Best British Newcomer” category. The band was also nominated for the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards in the Breakthrough Artist category. The band Ghost won in this category .

The group toured Australia for the first time in July and August with House vs Hurricane . This was followed by a European tour in September and October 2012, where the group toured the UK together with Bleed from Within and Crossfaith . In mid-2013 it was announced that While She Sleeps would play on the Warped Tour .

In January and February While She Sleeps toured Europe as a special guest with Betraying the Martyrs , Motionless in White and Asking Alexandria . This concert tour went through the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Austria, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Italy and Switzerland. A performance at the Soundwave Festival in Australia followed in February and March . Immediately afterwards, the band was the opening act for Parkway Drive on their tour, which led through the USA and Canada . Veil of Maya and The Word Alive also appeared as support on isolated shows . A short tour of the UK followed . This was followed by an appearance on the Warped Tour , where the group attended every concert in the US and Canada. The musicians announced during the Warped Tour that the group was working on the successor to This is the Six .

Aaran McKenzie and Lawrence Taylor announced in an interview on July 8, 2013 that the group were working on material for their second studio album. At that time, the group played their second tour in North America as part of the Warped Tour . Apart from the tour, according to the two musicians, the group is writing new pieces. The musicians planned to move into the studio a few weeks after the Warped Tour ended.

In February and March 2014, the group was to play a European tour together with Callejon as the opening act for Bullet for My Valentine , which will go through the Netherlands , Luxembourg , France , Austria , Belgium , Germany , Switzerland , Poland , the Czech Republic , Norway , Sweden and Finland and Russia should lead. Due to problems with the singer's vocal cords after an operation, they had to cancel the tour, as they announced via a video on their Facebook page. Despite the singer's resignation in the meantime, work on the new album was in full swing. The group gave their first concert after the operation on the singer's vocal cords in June 2014 at the Download Festival . On September 27, 2014 the band started a European tour with Wovenwar as the opening act for In Flames in Krakow, Poland . This tour ends after 30 concerts in 17 countries on November 8, 2014 in the Scandinavium in Gothenburg . In addition, Papa Roach were invited to the tour as another band.

On October 27, 2014, the band released the music video for the song New World Torture . With this, the group announced their second studio album, called Brainwashed , which will be released on March 23, 2015 via Search and Destroy and Sony Music Entertainment . In addition, the group 22 to 30 April 2015 with the Cancer Bats by the United Kingdom tour.

You Are We (2017)

In April 2017, While She Sleeps released their fourth album, it was titled “You Are We” and was distributed via Nuclear Blast / Arising Empire and pre-financed by the band's fans via crowdfunding . True to the album title, fans could buy hand-made utensils, visit the band's own warehouse or participate in recordings or video shoots. For the album, four videos were released before the actual release, one of them for the song "Silence Speaks", which contains a guest contribution by Oliver Sykes , the singer of the English metalcore band Bring Me the Horizon . Nadine Schmidt from the online magazine metal.de describes the music in her review as "not quite so naive, but strong as a bear" and attested to the band that "every single musician has worked hard on himself and has found and optimized his own style for the band. "

Music genre

While She Sleeps play the classic variant of Metalcore and are often compared to other well-known representatives of the genre such as Bring Me the Horizon , Architects and Cancer Bats . The musicians themselves count Thrice , Underoath , Alexisonfire , Slipknot , Foo Fighters , Comeback Kid , Refused , Marilyn Manson and Gallows as musical influences on While She Sleeps.

In addition to the instrumentalization typical of Metalcore, the group is known for incorporating melodic guitar riffs and piano pieces into their songs. This makes the sound of While She Sleeps' music seem progressive .
