Hans-Georg Ebert

Hans-Georg Ebert (born July 22, 1953 in Aue ) is a German scholar of law and Islam . From 1998 until his retirement in July 2019 he was Professor of Islamic Law at the University of Leipzig .

Career

After graduating from high school in 1972, Ebert studied Arabic and law at the University of Leipzig from 1973 to 1978. This was followed by a temporary assistant at the African and Middle Eastern Studies section at Leipzig University. In 1982 Ebert became a Dr. jur. PhD . During the subsequent permanent assistantship, he spent several years studying and doing practical work in Arab countries (Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, etc.). After his habilitation in 1990 on the relationship between the state, the constitution and Islam in the Near and Middle East, he worked as a senior academic assistant (C2) at the newly founded Oriental Institute of the University of Leipzig. Until 1998 he temporarily represented the professorship for Islamic Studies at the University of Halle and the professorship for Oriental Philology (Islamic Studies) at the University of Kiel .

From October 1, 1998 to September 30, 2019, he was Professor of Islamic Law at the Oriental Institute of Leipzig University. His teaching and research focuses on “classic” and “modern” Islamic law, the legal systems of Arab countries and topics related to Islamic studies. Since October 1, 2019, he has been a Senior Research Fellow in the "Multiple Secularities" college research group at Leipzig University.

He has been a member of the German Association of the Middle East for contemporary research and documentation (DAVO) since it was founded in 1993. He is a co-founder of the Society for Arabic and Islamic Law (GAIR) and was its 1st chairman from 2009 to 2015. Since 2010 he has been a board member of the Center for Area Studies at the University of Leipzig. The University of Leipzig appointed him from 2012 to 2018 as an appointment officer.

Until 2018 he was editor of the series "Leipziger Contributions zur Orientwissenschaft" (LBO), which was published by Peter Lang-Verlag, Berlin / Bern. Since October 2017 he has been co-editor of the work Bergmann / Ferid / Henrich “International marriage and child law with citizenship law”, Frankfurt am Main, Berlin.

Ebert has been working at the AL-ARABIYYA-INSTITUTE founded by Eckehard Schulz in 2011 since 2018 .

In 2019 he received the WGIT Prize of the Scientific Society for Islamic Theology (WGIT).
