Eckehard Schulz

Eckehard Schulz (born September 3, 1952 in Markersdorf ) is a German Arabist and linguist. Until his retirement in 2018, he held the professorship for Arabic language and translation studies at the Oriental Institute of Leipzig University.

Career

After graduating from high school in 1971 and subsequent military service, Schulz studied from 1973 to 1978 at the African and Middle Eastern Studies section of the University of Leipzig as part of his studies a. a. The following subjects: Interpreting and translating Arabic and English, Persian, Arabic studies, Islamic studies, linguistics, history of the Arab countries, economics of the developing countries, economics of the Arab countries, international law, sociology, cultural studies in the USA, English history and literature.

He then became a research assistant and, from 1982, a university teacher at the African and Middle Eastern Studies section of the University of Leipzig and, in addition to linguistic and translation studies, taught simultaneous and consecutive interpreting and Arabic-German translation. As part of this activity, he also repeatedly worked as an interpreter and translator at the highest level. a. in Yemen, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt and Libya.

In 1986 Schulz was awarded a PhD with a thesis on language change in Arabic. phil. PhD . His doctoral supervisors were Wolfgang Reuschel and Günther Krahl.

In 1991 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the synonymy concepts of the Arab national grammarians and lexicographers of the 8th to 11th centuries. Reviewers were Wolfgang Reuschel, Günther Krahl and Wolfdietrich Fischer from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

In 1993 he was appointed professor for Arabic language and translation studies at the Oriental Institute of the University of Leipzig, where Schulz worked for many years as managing director.

As a visiting professor, he was on study and lecture trips a. a. in Egypt, Great Britain, Indonesia, Iran, Yemen, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Oman, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia and in the UAE

In 2011 Schulz founded the AL-ARABIYYA-INSTITUTE, in which he also works closely with Hans-Georg Ebert .
