Wolfdietrich Fischer

Wolfdietrich Fischer (born March 25, 1928 in Nuremberg ; † May 27, 2013 in Erlangen ) was a German Arabist .

Life

After graduating from Melanchthon High School in Nuremberg in 1947, Fischer studied Semitic Philology , Islamic Studies and Turkish Studies at the Universities of Erlangen and Munich . His principal teacher was the academic Arabist Hans Wehr (1909-1981), in which he in 1953 in Erlangen with the dissertation The demonstrative developments of the neurabischen dialects doctorate .

Fischer then held two research assistant positions, 1954–1957 with the orientalist Hellmut Ritter (1892–1971) in Frankfurt am Main and 1957–1963 with his doctoral supervisor Hans Wehr in Münster . There he completed his habilitation in 1963 in the subjects of Islamic Studies and Semitic Philology with the habilitation thesis Color and Form Designations in the Language of Old Arabic Poetry .

In 1964 he finally accepted the chair for Oriental Philology at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, which he held until his retirement in 1997. His research focus was Arabic linguistics and classical Arabic literature as well as their reception in German-speaking countries.

From 1986, Fischer was chairman of the Rückert- Gesellschaft e. V. in Schweinfurt from 1993 honorary member of the Association of Friends and Supporters of the Institute for Foreign Languages ​​and Foreign Studies at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg e. V.
