Air Djibouti is a Djibouti- based virtual airline . It does not (yet) have its own Air Operator Certificate and has its flight operations carried out by other companies in wet lease. Since August 2016, Air Djibouti , which initially only offered cargo flights, has also been active in passenger air traffic. It is the fourth airline to bear this name.

history

Air Djibouti was founded as a state company in February 2015 . The main shareholder is the state-owned Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority with 70 percent , the remaining 30 percent are held by the also state-owned operating company of Aéroport International de Djibouti (ADI). In May 2015, the company commissioned the British company Cardiff Aviation with the logistical planning for the start-up and implementation of operations. Cardiff Aviation is owned by Bruce Dickinson , singer of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden , who was also a professional pilot for the British charter airline Astraeus Airlines until 2011 . Cardiff Aviation offers its customers a corresponding business model for operating a virtual airline called “Airline in a Box” .

Air Djibouti started flight operations on August 3, 2015 with a Fokker F-27 ( registration number : 5Y-JUU) leased from the Kenyan Astral Aviation . The first flight was from Djibouti via Hargeisa to Mogadishu ( Somalia ). The Republic of Djibouti handed over a Boeing 767-200ER to the state-owned company in September 2015 . The machine, previously used as a government aircraft, was transferred to Bournemouth (Great Britain) in the same year to be converted for passenger flight operations. The machine has not yet been used. The original plan to operate a total of five aircraft in cargo traffic and on passenger flights to London , Dubai and Mumbai by the end of 2015 was not implemented. In the summer of 2016, Air Djibouti offered cargo charter flights to around fifteen destinations in Africa and to Dubai-World Central International Airport with the leased Fokker F-27 .

Passenger flight operations began on August 15, 2016 with a Boeing 737-400 operated by VVB Aviation Malta from Djibouti to Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa in Ethiopia . The British Cardiff Aviation has a 50 percent stake in the Maltese company . At the end of October 2016, Air Djibouti also rented a BAe 146-300 from the South African Fair Aviation and replaced the previously used Fokker F-27 with it. At the beginning of December 2016, the company announced that it would cooperate with Azerbaijan Airlines in the cargo flight sector .

Cardiff Aviation ended its collaboration with the company in November 2017. It was previously announced that Air Djibouti and Ethiopian Airlines are seeking a partnership.

fleet

In November 2017 Air Djibouti deployed a BAe 146-300 (ZS-SOR) from the South African Fair Aviation and a Boeing 727-200F (5Y-GMA) from the Kenyan Safe Air .

Before that, Air Djibouti operated a leased Fokker F-27 on cargo flights from August 2015 to October 2016 and a leased Boeing 737-400 on passenger flights from August 2016 to August 2017 .

A Boeing 767-200 transferred to the company by the Djibouti government is currently being converted for civilian operation at Cardiff Aviation's headquarters on the RAF base St. Athan after a long period of storage in Bournemouth . The delivery date has not yet been announced.
