history
The establishment was founded in 1887 as the People's Palace in London's East End. From the beginning of the 20th century, the People's Palace awarded a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of London . In 1907, under the name East London College, it was initially a temporary school at the University of London, and in 1915 it was permanently incorporated. From 1934 the establishment bore the name Queen Mary College , the name refers to the former Queen Mary of Teck , wife George V .
In its present form, Queen Mary College was created as a merger of Queen Mary College, Westfield College (founded in 1882), St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College (founded in 1843) and London Hospital Medical College (founded in 1785). In 1989, the Queen Mary merged with Westfield College to form Queen Mary & Westfield College, and in 1995 the London Hospital Medical College was added. In the same year it merged with St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, but retained some degree of independence. It was only in 2000 that it accepted the title of Queen Mary University of London .
