Rüdiger Görner

Rüdiger Görner (born June 4, 1957 in Rottweil ) is a German-speaking literary scholar and author. Görner has lived in London since 1981.

Life

After studying German, history, musicology, philosophy and English studies ( University College London ) as well as his doctorate in Tübingen and London , he taught as a lecturer, later reader and since 1997 professor at the University of Surrey , Aston University in Birmingham and has been at the University of Birmingham since 2004 at Queen Mary University of London as Centenary Professor of German with Comparative Literature.

He is a founding director of the Center for British German cultural relations ( english Center for Anglo-German Cultural Relations ) and editor of the yearbook Angermion. Yearbook for Anglo-German Literary Criticism, Intellectual History and Cultural Transfers , which deals with British-German cultural relations.

From 1999 to 2004 he was the director of the Institute of Germanic Studies at the University of London . There he founded the Ingeborg Bachmann Center for Austrian Literature in 2002 .

He taught as a visiting professor at the Universities of Mainz , Hanover , Heidelberg Tokyo , Vienna and Salzburg .

His main research interests are science and music in German-language literature, poetry theory at the turn of the century and “pluralectics” (instead of dialectics ) in European Romanticism.

He writes as a guest author for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Frankfurter Rundschau , Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Die Presse (Vienna). Guest contributions in Südwestrundfunk (SWR), Hessischer Rundfunk (HR), Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), Westdeutschen Rundfunk (WDR), and Deutschlandfunk (DLF), since the British referendum on Brexit (2016) numerous radio interviews with critical statements in various media.

Görner is a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry . In 2012 he was awarded the German Language Prize. In 2016 he received the Reimar Lüst Prize from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for his life's work. In 2017 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon for his work in the German-British cultural exchange.
