Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies

The Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies (IGRS) is an institute for German and Romance studies belonging to the University of London .

The IGRS is part of the School of Advanced Study and was created in 2004 through the merger of the Institute of Germanic Studies (founded in 1950) and the Institute of Romance Studies (founded in 1989). The institute is purely a postgraduate institution, i.e. In other words, only master’s courses and doctoral studies are offered there. In addition to German and Romance studies, the institute's focus is on research on cultural memory . In addition, the IGRS acts as a national center for related conferences, seminars and events.

Various research centers are affiliated with the IGRS: the Center for the Study of Cultural Memory, the Center for the Study of Contemporary Women's Writing, the Ingeborg Bachmann Center for Austrian Literature and the Research Center for German and Austrian Exile Studies.
