Catherine Wheel was a British band from Great Yarmouth , England . They named themselves after an old instrument of torture , the Richtrad (English "catherine wheel", after the martyr Catherine of Alexandria ).

history

The band formed in 1990 with the line-up Rob Dickinson - a cousin of Bruce Dickinson , singer of Iron Maiden - (vocals, guitar), Brian Futter (guitar), Dave Hawes (bass) and Neil Sims (drums). They were added to the shoegazing scene. Her debut Ferment received mostly good reviews and included the hit "Black Metallic." Her second album Chrome combined the shoegazing sound with much harder timbres. With their third album Happy Days , the band went even more towards hard rock , which received a mixed response from the press and fans. Their fourth album, Adam & Eve (1997), showed the band again on a more atmospheric course, heavily influenced by Talk Talk . The feedback orgies of the early days were abandoned in favor of a more filigree, more contemplative sound. Ben Ellis took over the bass from now on. After their 2000 album Wishville flopped, the band ended their collaboration.

Futter and Sims then worked together as the 50ft Monster , Ellis played with Serafin and Dickinson released a solo album called Fresh Wine for the Horses in September 2005 . In 2006 Dickinson went on tour with the Australian psychedelic rock band The Church . He then retired from the music business and founded the car company Singer Vehicle Design in California in 2009 , which specializes in the refinement of Porsche 911s .
