I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) is the title of a song by the Scottish band The Proclaimers . It was first released in 1988 on the album Sunshine on Leith .

Emergence

Rumor has it that this song was inspired by Amy Austin, who was a childhood friend who lived in Leith near the brothers.

Trivia

In 1993 I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) was used as the soundtrack for the feature film Benny & Joon . The popular film helped to make the song known in the United States and thus enabled the first international rise in the charts. It is often claimed that this song was a 1990 hit, due to the huge boom of the time.

The song is very popular in Scotland. Every time the Scottish national football team scores, it is played and the fans sang along. This also happens to the Scottish National Rugby Union team when they score a point at Murrayfield Stadium. The Scottish dart player Robert Thornton also uses the song as running-in music at tournaments.

The SV Werder Bremen also used the song for several years as Tormelodie. When SV Werder scores a goal in the Weserstadion , the typical foghorn sounds, followed by the chorus of the song.

The Proclaimers played it on July 6, 2005 at Edinburgh 50,000 - The Final Push at Murrayfield Stadium as a token of the conclusion to The Long Walk To Justice .

In 2006 I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) was shown as a cutaway gag in the episode " You May Now Kiss the… Uh… Guy Who Receives " of the 4th season of Family Guy .

The song was also used as the theme song for the Swedish television program High Chaparall .

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) was always in the flashbacks 1994-2007 episode " Arrivederci, Fiero " of How I Met Your Mother of the cassette tape played, as the audio cassette in the player of the Pontiac Fiero of Marshall Eriksen stuck stayed. It was played again in the episode " The Caffeine Trip " as road trip music for Ted and Marshall. It was also played in the closing credits of the British comedy Burke & Hare .

On September 11, 2010, Matthew Wilkening of AOL Radio ranked the original version from 1988 at number 50 of the worst songs of all time (100 Worst Songs Ever).

The song was also very popular in Spain in the late 1990s thanks to a television commercial . It was the reference song of the television advertising of Retevisión (now ONO ) it was one of the first telecommunications companies in Spain, after the liberalization of the sector in 1997. The first television advertisements were shown with the original voice, later the text was translated into Spanish and sent to the company personalized.

The cover version by Steven Curtis Chapman was played on February 18, 2010 by NASA as a wake-up call on the International Space Station and on the STS-130 on the 12th day of flight .

In 2011, The Proclaimers played the song in the Scottish film Rock in the Park , which was recorded during the Edinburgh annual rock festival known as " T in the Park ". In 2012 the song was played several times in the movie The Wedding of Our Biggest Friend . It also appears in the film and in the credits of the British feature film Angels' Share .

At the end of the fourth season of Doctor Who a video was released in which the entire crew including numerous actors and the brothers of The Proclaimers dance to the song. The video was widely distributed on the Internet and was viewed several million times on Youtube.

“I'm Gonna Be” is part of the film musical Sunshine on Leith (2014), which is based on songs by the Proclaimers. In the closing sequences, the protagonist Davy and his girlfriend Yvonne sing the song in a public square after they have reconciled.

In 2014 it appeared in an advertisement for Ferrero's children's bars.

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) debuted in the British singles chart in 11th place in 1988. After a great film success in which I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) was used as the soundtrack , the song first rose in 1993 the international charts. The re-released version from 2007 debuted at number 26 in the UK and number 7 on the Billboard Eurochart Hot 100 .
