Benny & Joon is an American love - drama from the year 1993 is that mentally ill people as multifaceted characters.

action

Joon lives in a house with her older brother Benny. Since her parents were killed in an accident, Benny has acted as a parent substitute and guardian of his endangered sister in addition to his job as a car mechanic. The apparently disturbed Joon occasionally pursues her impulses carelessly and comes into conflict with the law. Despite the advice of her psychiatrist Dr. Garvey doesn't want Benny to put his younger sister back in a home.

Joon's loneliness is alleviated when she “wins” a fellow player's cousin at poker . Sam speaks little, wears an old-fashioned suit and hat and amuses others with pantomime, silent film-like interludes and recitations from horror films. Benny and Joon take Sam into their house. Like Joon, he's an outsider , but he's far less at risk and appears to have a positive impact on Joon.

While Joon and Sam are slowly getting closer, Benny meets Ruthie, who works in a café nearby. When Benny notices that his sister is in love, he reacts angrily and throws Sam out of the house. But Sam manages to get Joon to attempt an escape. She had a nervous breakdown on the bus. She has to go back to the mental hospital.

Benny and Sam get closer to worry about her. Sam now sees through Benny's fear of him as Joon's rival. Together they devise a plan to free Joon. With the help of Sam's abilities, that also works. In the end, Benny admits the two of them to be allowed to live together. The risk seems to be worth it. Benny's connection with Ruthie also seems to have a future.

background

Sam is one of Johnny Depp's star roles, with a serious expression on his face he imitates Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin . A scene at the bar in the café is a direct homage to a well-known scene from the gold rush : Sam sticks two forks into a bread roll and pretends to dance with these "legs" on the bar. Even Depp's facial expressions in this scene are strikingly reminiscent of Chaplin's. This scene was again taken up by a Simpsons episode.

He also convincingly presents the classic clown-like showpieces that Depp delivers to the amusement of some viewers in a park. In this respect, the role of Sam is a bow to the characters of the classic silent film cinema. Johnny Depp was nominated for a Golden Globe and an MTV Movie Award for his portrayal .

The title track I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) helped the Proclaimers achieve their international breakthrough.

Reviews

  • Lexicon of the international film : "A fairytale-like plea for the normal way of dealing with the mentally ill, which treats its concerns somewhat clichéd and superficial through a gag-emphasizing staging and relies on the perfectly choreographed tricks of the sympathetic main actor."
  • TV Spielfilm : “Despite the naive message of the script, director Chechik never raises his index finger too high in his love story. The film alternates virtuously between melancholy and high spirits, to which, in addition to the lively editing, the actors in particular contribute: Mary Stuart Masterson always lets unpredictable aggressiveness shine through behind Joon's vulnerable appearance, and Johnny Depp's bizarre pantomime interludes become wonderfully unkitchy. "
  • The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.

Gross profit

The film grossed around 23 million US dollars in North America.
