Celtic Thunder is a five-piece male Irish-Scottish singing group.

history

The project was initiated by the producer Sharon Browne , who had also created the female counterpart Celtic Woman , and the songwriter and producer Phil Coulter . Five singers with proven musical backgrounds, aged between 14 and 41, from Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland were selected for the group.

In August 2007, the first show of Celtic Thunder was staged at the Helix in Dublin . The repertoire included traditional Celtic songs, new compositions by Coulter and a whole range of oldies from the 60s to 80s. Two thirds of the songs were solo performances by one of the five singers. The replay of the event was broadcast nationwide on US television in March 2008, and it was also televised on St. Patrick's Day in New York.

Celtic Thunder proved to be very successful and the album for the show quickly conquered number one on the US world music album charts. It was at the top 18 times before it was replaced by the follow-up album Act Two in October of the same year . This second release came with a tour of the northern states with performances in 48 cities. Another highlight for the group was the performance in front of US President Obama on St. Patrick's Day 2009.

The third album, Take Me Home , was released in July 2009 and once again reached number one on the world music charts. Like all albums before, this album also successfully placed in the official sales charts .
