Hinterland is the third studio album by the German rapper and singer Casper . It was released on September 27, 2013. On October 11, it entered the German and Austrian album charts at number one.

background

In 2011 Casper released his number one album XOXO . After the festival summer 2012 he went to Calonge with Markus Ganter and two musicians from his live band, Jan Korbach and Konrad Betcher , to create the first drafts of the album.

In November 2012 he already spoke about the direction of the album in an interview:

“We are working on a new record and it will be a bit world music, you could almost say. Such a mixture of Kanye West x Nick Cave x Tom Waits x Sizarr x Animal Collective . It is going to be great!"

- Casper :

In January 2013 he added:

“The direction is: there will be neither a new direction towards the sun nor a second XOXO. Personally, I just don't see any point in repeating myself. "

- Casper :

Originally, Casper revealed, the album was supposed to be titled Uckermark . As the publication date, he initially stated the middle of 2013, but also said at the same time:

“I don't feel like putting something undercooked into the world just because the release date would be ideal. Most of all, I am aware of the pressure that is on the whole thing. A few months ago we confidently whispered to the world that this production will be a walk in the park, we are all laughing with tears at these statements. It's really hard. Above all, the famous Casper's writer's block back in full effect ... but the music is being screwed on like crazy and I am almost every day as a little child happy about what is already there! "

- Casper :

On July 3, 2013, the rapper published a countdown on his homepage. This fell at the end of Casper's appearance on the Splash . At the end of the gig, the first trailer for the new album was released.

The first single released on August 2, 2013, Im Ascheregen , which reached number 4 in the German, number 15 in the Austrian and number 42 in the Swiss charts, contains the text quote "One third of heating oil, two thirds of gasoline", originally from the Slime -Song bull pigs , but the same quote was used in Kettcar's song 48 hours back in 2005 . The German-language edition of Rolling Stone magazine rated the song as "quite boring" and "rather boring". In the music video of the second single Hinterland released on September 5, 2013, as well as in the thematically related video for Everything ends (but never the music) , Germany's Next Top Model participant of the year 2012, Lisa Volz, plays Casper's friend. She can also be seen in the music videos for the songs Jambalaya , Everything ends (but never the music) and Im Ascheregen and graces the cover of the album. According to Dan of Radio Jam FM , the music video for the song Im Ascheregen is reminiscent of Macklemore's song Can't Hold with a "long intro" "landscape shots, characters in art situations" and "in between the rapper waving his arms wildly" Us from 2011. The single Hinterland, released on September 6, 2013, reached number 11 in the German charts, number 18 in the Austrian and number 51 in the Swiss charts.

criticism

Mirror Author Andreas Borcholte find the album intelligent, poetic, moody, erdschwer . In addition , German-language hip-hop has never dug so close to the basic German feeling.

Dasding describes Hinterland as an album in which hard beats and classic hip hop tracks are actually missing, but are still there. In addition, the songs sound very American-folk and melancholic in places .

The readers of the German music magazine Visions voted the album number 3 on the 2013 annual best list.
