Chronik 2 is a sampler from the independent label Selfmade Records . It was released on April 17, 2009 on the Düsseldorf label. The CD's contributions were made by Kollegah , Casper , Shiml and Favorite , the label's four artists. In addition to the CD, Chronik 2 comes with a DVD. The sampler entered the German album charts at number 15.

background

In 2007 Selfmade Records released the first label sampler Chronik 1 , which presents the artists of the label as well as the label founder Elvir Omerbegovic known as Slick One . This was followed by the albums Alphagene by Kollegah, Anarcho by Favorite, Kollegah by Kollegah and Im Alleingang by Shiml, all of which were able to reach positions in the German charts.

On February 6, 2009, the Düsseldorf label announced that they had signed rapper Casper . Omerbegovic commented on the obligation Caspers and explained this passe " because of its unique style and its special newcomer status [...] perfectly [ r ] Label philosophy. “In an interview, Casper said that he was not looking for a new label when Selfmade Records asked . However, he opted for the contractual relationship, as he promised himself attention and marketing tailored to the artist, as he had previously seen with the other artists. In addition to the Düsseldorf label, Casper received twelve other offers, but they did not promise him an album release before the end of 2010.

In contrast to Chronicle 1 , managing director Slick One plays no musical role in the second part, apart from the title Brotherly War , as he is no longer active as a rapper. He describes the title, which had already been created a few years earlier, as “a farewell track from the German rap scene. “Edo Maajka, who is a friend of Slick Ones, visited it in early 2009 and recorded a verse for the song.

Two weeks before the sampler was released, a snippet briefly alluding to the titles of Chronicle 2 was published.

DVD

In addition to the music CD Chronik 2 , the publication comes with the DVD Selfmade Vol. 1 , which has a running time of around two hours. Each of the label's artists was filmed in a different context. Casper visited the International Film Festival in Berlin , where he speaks to various celebrities, Kollegah drives through Düsseldorf with the rapper Farid Bang and smokes Shisha with this shisha , Shiml was filmed as part of the “release party” for his album Im Einzelingang and Favorite an interview with an inmate of the Herford correctional facility , where he is also playing a concert.

Texts

Casper

Casper contributed to six tracks on the album, including the two solo songs Elefant (I stay standing) and Father's Day . In Father's Day the subject is child abuse treated. There are several interpretations: Casper's autobiographical narrative / the narration of a lyrical self that is sexually abused . In the course of the description, his feelings / the feelings of the lyrical self and his powerlessness in the face of paternal violence are emphasized: “ The door flies open, feel the slap in the face, under your back the bar breaking. Hold me tight, pressed into the mattress by him, hate the look, can't get hold of it. This is not my dad, this is another person who grabs my wrist and tosses and forces under his breath. Kiss my cheek, wipe away the sweat of fear. Whimpering in the dark, I wish I was far away. “ Casper himself considers the second track, Elefant , to be one of the best songs he recorded in the months before the sampler was released. In it, the rapper expresses his mostly negative view of the German rappers, complains about a lack of respect for him and takes up the reactions of the listeners to his music, which, for example, his songs, due to the emphasis on negative feelings in many of his pieces, often as Calling "emo rap". In contrast to his solo titles, Casper wrote humorous texts for his titles with other rappers or, as in the song Mittelfinger Hoch, stylistically uses battle rap . In an interview, Casper stated that he wanted to be as versatile as possible on Chronicle 2 .

Favorite

Favorite in 2008

Favorite recorded two solo pieces for the sampler: Superman and Lebenswerk . In Superman , he pokes fun at popular club songs by American rappers such as Lollipop by Lil Wayne and Crank That (Soulja Boy) by Soulja Boy . Favorite also imitates stylistic devices of these titles. The man from Essen also refers several times to the saying “I dance the Kaas in the club” by the German rapper Kaas . Lifetime's work , on the other hand, is a self-critical title in which Favorite addresses his drug use, lack of education and missed opportunities. He explains to the listener that he can learn mistakes from favorites. He told the Rap.de website that drug consumption was necessary for his music and that he continued to take drugs, even though this was detrimental to his private life. Favorite sees his contributions to the sampler as a personal development. Having previously about for beats for hip hop especially battle rap -pieces where punchlines had been the focus, published, he had for Chronicle 2 care "audible music," for example, the storytelling can be assigned to take.

Kollegah

Rapper Kollegah

For his solo title Semi-Automatic and the pieces Jebiga with Favorite and Gs die jung with SunDiego, Kollegah uses the same themes and stylistic devices as for the songs on his albums Alphagene and Kollegah . In terms of content, motifs such as drug trafficking, violence and sex are taken up, with the rapper presenting himself in an emphatically arrogant manner. In addition to the content-related component, Kollegah uses word games that contribute to the entertainment value of the title. He mainly uses homonyms (“ Everyone keeps telling me not to throw money around like crazy, but rather put it on the side than if I were doing first aid. ”) And the special forms of homophones ( " Fav recently wrecked my Mercedes, but it doesn't matter my yard is full of those (Danes) like Copenhagen. ") And homographers (" I'll buy you a line and you'll get addicted to cocaine . Well, that comes from it, like." OJ Simpson . ”) In interviews, Kollegah said his contributions to Chronicle 2 were in the same style as always and stated that he could not be expected to develop further.

Guest Posts

Although the artists who are contractually bound to Selfmade Records are the focus, some external rappers were also brought in for Chronik 2 for joint titles. Casper explained that when the sampler was being designed, the idea arose that each artist should do a song with an outside artist. He then contacted Marteria , with whom he had wanted to work for a long time. Kollegah recorded the title G's die jung with the rapper SunDiego . Kollegah got to know this in 2005 via the RBA internet platform .

After Favorite had denied the Life is Live tour with rappers Olli Banjo and FR in October 2008 , he decided to collaborate with Olli Banjo. In return, Favorite will be featured on the fourth part of Banjo's Sparring album series . Shiml and his long-time friend MontanaMax contributed the piece Er & Ich 2009 . MontanaMax also accompanied the label's artists on the joint tour of Chronik 2 . Furthermore enters Edo Maajka in a song with Slick One in appearance. Kollegah and Favorite also recorded the title of West Germany Kings with Farid Bang . At the same time as Chronicle 2 was released , Selfmade Records announced an album by Kollegah and Farid Bang under the title Young, Brutal, Good-Looking . Kollegah told Backspin Hip Hop magazine that he met Farid Bang in Düsseldorf and that he thinks he is the best rapper in Germany.

production

The rappers represented on the sampler perform their lyrics on hip-hop beats . Various hip-hop producers were involved in the creation of the various instrumentals. The main producer of Chronik II is the hip-hop musician Rizbo , who is under contract with Selfmade Records , and who was responsible for the background music for the tracks Middle Finger Up , Lifetime Achievement , War , Semi-Automatic , West Germany's Kings and Civil War . Four more beats were contributed to the producer Tikay One, who had produced the first time for an album of the label. These beats can be assigned to the pieces Father's Day , 2x more like you , Rock'n'Roll and Steamroller . The beat of the song Elefant (I stay standing) was produced by Gordon Shumway and the instrumental by Superman by Hardkore Rap Beats. Furthermore, the track Jebiga was produced by Vizir, who had already produced for the albums of the artists Favorite and Kollegah in the past. The song G's die jung was produced by B-Case, who, like Tikay One, appears for the first time on a Selfmade Records release. Alper , who produced the major part of the album Im Ein Einzelingang, is responsible for the background music for the title With Every Breath . In addition, the pieces Unter Null by Bjet and Er und Ich were produced by Awe in 2009 .

The mixing , which involves editing the sound recordings, for example by adding effects or determining the balance of the various components of the piece, was done by Bjet. According Slick One quality blend of is 2 Chronicles conspicuously better than the first part of the year 2007. Following the mixing Sascha "Busy" Bühren took over in the Truebusyness Studios audio post mastering , where it comes to improving the quality of the clay material.

marketing

Video

The title Mittelfinger Hoch by Casper, Kollegah and Favorite was implemented as a video by the film production company Los Banditos, which had already adapted Kollegah's play Herbst in 2008 . The clip was shot in Berlin at the suggestion of Los Banditos. Slick One explained that the label wanted an “ urban video ” and that Berlin was a perfect location for it. For Casper, the recordings of Mittelfinger Hoch were the first video shoot. The clip premiered on March 24, 2009. The video was then broadcast on the music channel MTV.

Confrontation with Aggro Berlin

On March 11th, 2009 Selfmade Records put the song Westdeutschlands Kings by Kollegah, Favorite and Farid Bang as a so-called “pre-single” free of charge on the Internet. On this, Kollegah and Favorite attack the artists Sido , Kitty Kat and Fler from the Berlin label Aggro Berlin . Two days later, the title Earlier you were fans of Fler, Kitty Kat and Godsilla was published, in which the Berliners react to the attacks and accuse the rappers from Selfmade Records of producing a " beef " to market the Chronik 2 sampler : “ It used to be tracks, today it is an advertisement for the sampler. “The song was particularly criticized because of the line“ Man, no matter what you do, you will always be the one boy without parents for me and the world ”, with which Kitty Kat alludes to the accidental death of Favorite parents. On March 20, there was another answer from Kollegah, who put the title Fan Mail on the Internet. Fler responded with the piece Schrei nach Liebe , the refrain of which is based on the title Schrei nach Liebe by Die Ärzte : “ That you dissed me is just a silent cry for love. Look, this milk face longs for tenderness. You don't have to project your self-hatred onto others. I know your father never had time for you. "

The e-zine Laut.de reported on the disputes and referred to the benefits for both sides who had also advertised the publications Chronik 2 and Fler , which was published on March 27, 2009, with the titles . Editor Dani Fromm praised the confrontation as " highly entertaining terrain fights " and rated both the beats and the performance of Flers positively, who " in terms of [sic!] Pictures and puns " does not come close to Kollegah, but still sells well.

tour

The label's artists completed a joint tour called Mittelfinger Hoch! -Tour . This began on April 8th in Hanover and ended after 19 dates on May 16, 2009 with a concert in Vienna . According to a report from Selfmade Records , the concerts in Cologne and Münster were sold out in advance.

On April 9th, on which the cancellation of the Aggro Berlin label was announced, riots broke out at the concert in Berlin. At the beginning of the performance, Shiml and MontanaMax equipment was destroyed. Furthermore, the two rappers were attacked, with MontanaMax sustaining lacerations and a broken arm. He was unable to attend the following tour dates and appeared again for the first time on April 17th in Cologne. Ten people were arrested as part of the investigation into "a particularly serious breach of the peace ", including rapper Joe Rilla .

The concert on April 16, 2009 in Hamburg was simultaneously broadcast on the internet. The “Stream” was broadcast on the Mixery Raw Deluxe website .

reception

success

Shiml, Favorite, Casper and Kollegah on the cover of the 101st issue of Backspin

Chronik 2 entered the German album charts at number 15. This enabled the record to reach the highest chart position of the Düsseldorf independent label until Christoph Alex was released . In the second week the sampler dropped to position 93 on the charts. Chronicle 2 also placed 72 in the Austrian charts.

criticism

Max Brandl, editor of the Laut.de e-zine , addressed the sampler and the context of the publication in the form of a review. Brandl also goes into the overlap between the closure of the Berlin label Aggro Berlin , which has been one of the most influential companies in German rap music since its foundation in 2001, and the release of the second sampler by Selfmade Records . Aggro Berlin has implemented concepts “ as uncompromisingly and successfully at the same time ” as no other hip-hop label. The attitude of " inflexibility ", however, led to the protagonists becoming inflexible, so that self-made records could provide for the further development of German hip-hop with new musical concepts. Chronicle 2 shows numerous styles of rap and presents, for example, pieces of gangster rap as well as the classic "backpacker hip-hop". These different facets are “ not separated from one another by a razor-sharp edge, but merged into a unity that is nourished by precisely this variety. “Casper is a good example of the versatility, as he can record battle rap in combination with the other artists, but also presents introverted pieces, as with Father's Day . Kollegah is positively highlighted as an entertainer who is characterized by his " grandiose unreflected, arrogant and out of thin air Hollywood-meets-Hundertwasser sentence structure ". Brandl also praises the productions of the titles and awards the publication four out of a possible five evaluation points. In a final conclusion, the editor attests that the Düsseldorf label has the potential to take on the position of aggro Berlin .

The website Rap.de published a review of Chronik 2 , in which the versatility of the sound carrier is emphasized and Selfmade Records is declared the “(indie) label number one”. Shiml, Kollegah, Favorite and Casper are rated in the review by the editor Lisa. In her opinion, Kollegah disappoints on the sampler, for example with his contribution semi-automatic and his verse on middle finger high . In contrast, West Germany's Kings and Jebiga are mentioned as positive counterexamples. Shiml has already been criticized as colorless in a rating for his album In Single Going, and from the editor's point of view does not deliver any surprises on Chronicle 2 either, whereby at least every breath is rated positively. Favorites contributions are highlighted as a surprise from the sampler. Like Superman, these are extremely entertaining or convince like life's work through honest self-reflection, which gives the title an emotional depth without resorting to a melancholy mood. Casper also received a good review and was particularly praised for the “almost physically noticeable intensity” of Father's Day . Furthermore, the guest contributions were made by prominent rappers, but they do not achieve the appropriate quality.

The hip-hop magazine Juice appointed Chronicles 2 in our Homegrown for "Mixtape of the Month". The musical diversity is also emphasized in his criticism. The chart placement would suggest that “interesting artists” are more important for a label than a “uniform image ”. The editors see the joint pieces by Favorite and Olli Banjo as well as by Casper and Marteria as positive. Kollegah, Casper and Favorite deliver the highlights of the release, while Shiml and Slick One and guest rappers MontanaMax, SunDiego and Farid Bang don't make a bigger impression.
