Generation Null is an album by the German rappers MontanaMax (Max Mönster) and Shiml (Jan Viohl). It was released on November 26, 2010 on the independent label Selfmade Records .

background

The Bremer MontanaMax and Shiml released their first album together in 2005, Nach uns der Rest . Shiml then signed his first artist contract with the hip-hop label Selfmade Records , through which he released the album Hinterm Horizont in 2006 and Im Ein Einzelschluss in 2009 . MontanaMax also recorded two solo albums with the only child and Maximilian . In October 2009 there was a separation between Shiml and Selfmade Records . The rapper had completed his studies, which was running parallel to his music career, and decided to reorientate his career. Despite the lack of a contractual relationship with a music label, Shiml stated that he wanted to continue recording music.

In March 2010, some media started speculating about a joint album by Shiml and MontanaMax after they both created a joint Facebook page. The album was officially announced in mid-October 2010. Selfmade Records was won as a platform for publication .

The two rappers tied the commitment for the publication via Selfmade Records to the condition that the label accepts the final version of the album and also takes over the joint homepage of the rappers as well as the independently designed artwork.

concept

The term "Generation Zero" originally comes from Spain, where it is used for young people who have no chance on the job market despite having completed an apprenticeship or a university degree. Shiml and MontanaMax as well as numerous people from the circle of friends of the two rappers are, according to MontanaMax, in a comparable situation. The title Generation Null describes the concept of the album. It is a “ snapshot ” of the life of the two artists and was created in a phase of a process of self-discovery. To ensure that the music is authentic, Shiml and MontanaMax do without the style of battle rap and the use of punchlines .

production

The production of the album was completely taken over by The Gunna. Half of the pieces were musically implemented with samples . Samples were completely dispensed with for the remaining songs. The melodies of these songs were recorded with instruments.

marketing

The first song on the album was released in mid-October, Black . This was made available free of charge on the Internet. A snippet followed at the beginning of November in which the tracks on the album were played. The title Randale was implemented as a video and published on November 17th.

criticism

The German hip-hop magazine Juice described Generation Zero as a “ sympathetic ” and “ musically [...] appealing work. “In contrast to Shiml's former label colleagues, whose music is characterized by“ boasting and mobbing ”, the two rappers dealt with topics on their joint album that move them in life. 82 million treat social grievances in Germany and the theme song Generation Zero is seen as a role play. The use of Marsimoto is also praised as being used appropriately. The editor finds negative criticism regarding " one or the other [...] too whiny number. Randale is also not happily placed.
