history

2005-2009

The Selfmade Records Artists 2009: Favorite, Casper, Shiml and Kollegah
Kollegah and Farid Bang (2012)

In 2005 Selfmade Records was founded by Elvir Omerbegovic, who is known as a rapper under the pseudonym Slick One, and Philipp Dammann. Dammann, who had already enjoyed success as a member of the rap duo Creutzfeld & Jakob under the name Flipstar in the years before , was initially artistically involved, but left the record company at the end of 2005. Since then, Omerbegovic has been sole director of the label .

The first rapper to be signed to the independent label was the Essen favorite . On April 4, 2005, the sampler Schwarzes Gold was released as the first release on Selfmade Records . This was followed by the album Rapping Can Be Fatal by Favorite and Jason. This was mainly produced by the house producer Rizbo , who had already been signed in 2004. Rizbo was instrumental in all subsequent releases of the label as the main producer. The producer had already achieved notoriety through the production of the single Endgegner by Berlin based Bushido .

In the second half of 2005 Shiml from Bremen was signed to Selfmade Records . In December 2005 the rapper Kollegah followed, whose first publication, the pimp tape as X-Mas Edition , was released on December 30, 2005. Chronicle 1 was published on July 6, 2007 . On the label's second sampler, the focus is on the three rappers who are under contract with Selfmade Records . At the end of the year, the independent label presented itself at Showtime, Bitch! -Tour that went through eleven cities.

In 2007 Selfmade Records entered the German charts for the first time with the album Alphagene by Kollegah . Kollegah's debut, the release of which was accompanied by appearances by the rapper on the music broadcaster MTV , reached position 51 on the German album charts. Another success for Selfmade Records is the album Anarcho , which was released on May 2, 2008 and entered the album charts at number 24. As part of the release of the album, three video clips were shot, of which the video for the song Ich miss you won number 1 on the TRL Most Wanted charts of the music show Urban TRL . On August 29th, Kollegah's second solo album was released on the Düsseldorf label. Kollegah reached number 17 on the album charts. In addition, the sound carrier was the first publication by Selfmade Records to occupy a position in the Austrian album charts. In December 2008 a mixtape from Favorite and Hollywood Hank followed with the title Beats for Hip Hop . At the end of January 2009, Shiml's second album was released, Im Alone.

On February 6, 2009 it was announced that the rapper Casper was signed to Selfmade Records . On the sampler Chronik 2 , published a short time later , Casper was presented alongside Kollegah, Favorite and Shiml. In the course of marketing the sampler, the song Westdeutschlands Kings was made available for download. In this the Berlin hip-hop musicians Sido , Kitty Kat and Fler of the Berlin label Aggro Berlin are attacked. The song drew an argument between rappers from both camps, which was expressed, among other things, in a number of published songs in which the respective opponents are attacked. On April 8th, 2009 the middle finger started high! -Tour on which all artists of the label were represented. 19 concerts were completed for the tour. At the second concert on April 9th at the Kato club in Berlin , riots broke out in which MontanaMax , among others , was injured. A collaboration between Kollegah and German Dream rapper Farid Bang was released on June 19, 2009 under the album title Jung, brutal, gutaussehend . In October 2009, Shiml and Selfmade Records separated amicably after four years of cooperation. Shiml stated that he wanted to reorient himself professionally after completing his studies. In the following months, Kollegah released pimp tape Volume 3 and Hoodtape Volume 1 .

2010-2013

At the end of October 2010, after Shiml, Casper also announced that he was leaving the label's artist roster. Casper switched to Four Music , but, according to a press release from Selfmade Records, he will remain connected to his former label “ for the next two albums [...] . "

On May 6, 2011, Selfmade Records released Favorite's third solo album under the title Christoph Alex . With this, it was possible to reach number 4 in the album charts, which is the best positioning for the independent label so far. Following the release, Favorite completed a joint tour with the rapper Kaas , whose second solo album was also released on May 6, 2011. At the beginning of July 2011, Casper's album XOXO was released , which was realized through his new label Four Music and with participation for Selfmade Records . XOXO went straight to number 1 on the album charts. Kollegah's third solo album Bossaura was released on October 14, 2011. It rose to number 5 in the German charts. The publication also placed in the top 20 of the Austrian and Swiss album charts. On October 14, 2011, Kollegah started a joint tour with Favorite under the title “Live 2011 Tour”. The rappers appeared in 34 cities. At the end of 2011, Selfmade Records announced via Favorite that the record company had acquired the rights to Hollywood Hanks' album Soziopath , which was released in 2006, and sold it exclusively in the online shop .

On December 21, 2011 the label announced that the duo Genetikk had been signed. Selfmade Records then released the duo's album Voodoo circus through its online shop. At the end of March 2012 it was announced that another hip-hop group, 257ers , had been contractually bound to the label. However, the trio signed the contract before Genetikk. Since Genetikk had already finished the work on Voodoo circus , the duo was preferred. On September 7, 2012, the album HRNSHN was released by 257ers. With this, the trio was able to enter the German album charts at number 6. Johnny Illstrument was signed as a further producer at the end of September 2012. At the end of October 2012, Selfmade Records extended the contract with the media group BMG Germany for the publishing house Selfmade. Kollegah and Favorite, who had already signed publishing contracts with BMG, extended them. In addition, edition agreements were signed with 257ers, Johnny Illstrument and Genetikk. The contracts with BMG Rights Management exclusively cover the evaluation of author and composer rights.

On February 8, 2013, Kollegah and Farid Bang released their second album Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2 . With this Selfmade Records reached number 1 in the German album charts for the first time. The highest position was also achieved in Austria and Switzerland. In addition, the release with 80,000 units represents the best-selling German hip-hop album in Germany in the last five years in the first week. At the beginning of March 2013, after just three weeks of sales in Germany, the album achieved gold status for over 100,000 units sold. Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2 is the label's first release to be awarded a gold record. On June 21, 2013, the duo Genetikk's second commercial album, DNA, was released. As in the course of the publication of Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2 , the publication received not only reviews in music media but also attention in news magazines.

At the end of September 2013, Selfmade Records extended their contract with the Cologne music distributor Groove Attack . He had been responsible for the distribution of the label publications since the label was founded.

On January 13, 2014, it was announced that the hip-hop label is forming a joint venture with Universal Music Group . At the same time, the major label took over the distribution of the hip-hop label, while Selfmade Records retains the rights to the music. According to Elvir Omerbegovic, the idea behind the collaboration with Universal Music is "to be able to act with the speed of an indie and the power of a major ". In addition to Omerbegovic, the President Central Europe of Universal Music Group International and Deutsche Grammophon Frank Briegmann were responsible for the contractual cooperation between the two companies. Omerbegovic had negotiated with him for about a year. As part of the partnership, Omerbegovic will act as President of Rap Selfmade Records and Universal Music Germany in the future . The album King released on May 9, 2014 , which is the fourth solo album for the rapper Kollegah, achieved gold status in Germany for 100,000 units sold just 24 hours after its release, according to the label. In the following week, this statement was confirmed in a chart telegram from GfK. With over 160,000 units sold, the album positioned itself directly at number one in the German charts. In Austria and Switzerland, too, the album went straight to number one and, according to Selfmade Records, also achieved gold status in the first week. On June 11, 2014, Selfmade Records announced that King was able to sell more than 200,000 units in Germany after just under five weeks and thus achieved platinum status. In addition, Kollegah was the first German artist to reach number 1 on the global Spotify album charts with 10.9 million album streams .

On July 16, 2014 Selfmade Records announced that they had signed the artist Karate Andi . This was followed by the album Boomshakkalakka by the 257ers trio, which reached number 1 in the German album charts. After the album was released, the group completed a concert tour from September to December 2014 that included 43 performances. In the first half of 2015, the publications Neues von Gott des Rappers Favorite and Achter Tag von Genetikk followed, which also reached the highest position in the charts. Eighth day represents the sixth album in a row for Selfmade Records , which reached number 1 in the German charts. The label sampler Chronik 3 was published on October 9, 2015 , on which all current rappers of the label, the former artists Casper and Shiml as well as Marteria , SSIO and MontanaMax are represented. Chronicle 3 was also able to occupy the highest position in the German charts. In addition, the tracks Red Light District Anthem , Medusa , Chronik 3 and No New Friends entered the single charts. In December, Kollegah published the pimp tape Volume 4 , which reached number 1 in the charts. This makes it the eighth number one position in a row for the label. Apart from Mörder , all of the songs on the album were also in the singles charts. In addition, pimp tape Volume 4 was awarded a gold record for 100,000 sales. With the publication of Zuhaltenertape Volume 4 , the collaboration between Selfmade Records and Kollegah ended after ten years , who subsequently founded his own label.

In May 2016, Karate Andi's first solo album followed under the title Turbo . This rose to number 2 in the German charts. On July 1, the 257ers released their album Mikrokosmos . This is the first of the group that was recorded without the rapper Keule. Mikrokosmos made it to number 1 in the charts. The duo also celebrated success with the songs Holland and Holz , which each sold over 200,000 times and were thus awarded gold records. At the end of 2016 Selfmade Records founded a production unit consisting of Bazzazian, Alexis Troy and Yunus 'Kingsize' Cimen. In the future, the label will take over the management of the hip-hop producers. In May 2017, the single Holz received a platinum record thanks to 400,000 units sold. At the same time, Selfmade Records announced the contract extension with the 257ers. On November 24th, 2017 Favorite released his fifth solo album, "Alternative Für Deutschland", which reached number 15 in the German album charts. In December 2017, Genetikk founded their own label Outta This World and left Selfmade Records. Favorite followed in June 2018 by founding his own label Upperclass Movement .

reception

criticism

Dennis Sand dealt with the label Selfmade Records in an article for Jetzt.de , an online magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung . In it, he compares the Düsseldorf label with the record company Aggro Berlin . This achieved its commercial breakthrough through “ a new German hardness ” and thereby brought German hip-hop “ from the bottom to the top ”. Selfmade Records is " now continuing this idea with the opposite sign " by contracting intelligent rappers who " use the stylistic devices of the street " in order to " reach the masses ". Kollegah, for example, “picks up on the codes and stylistic devices of the hip-hop scene, but at the same time takes good care of educated bourgeois cultural assets ”. Furthermore, like Aggro Berlin before , self-made records establish the “ stereotyping of artists ” for marketing. Among other things, Kollegah takes on " the self-inflicted role as boss " and Favorite plays the " role of anarchos ". The “ brilliant technology ” unites the artists of the independent label. However, since the roles of the artists and their texts “ do not always equal the much-invoked authenticity ”, “ image rap ” is often used negatively in connection with the label . In Sand's view, this accusation comes from critics who forget that music is first and foremost art.
