Beats for Hip Hop is a mixtape by the German rappers Favorite and Hollywood Hank . It was released on December 6, 2008 in a limited number on the Düsseldorf label Selfmade Records . The mixtape could only be obtained from the label's internet shop and is not available in regular stores. Beats for Hip Hop sold out two weeks before it was released. In July 2012, Beats for Hip Hop was released as a so-called re-edition.

Background and origin

Favorite in 2008

The Essen-based rapper Favorite released his second solo album Anarcho at the beginning of May 2008 , which earned him a position at number 24 on the album charts. Favorite already worked with Hollywood Hank on the production of Anarcho , so that the title Organ Robbery came about for the album. After the decision to publish a joint mixtape, the recording only took a few days, according to a press release. Beats for Hip Hop is Hollywood Hank's second release after his album Soziopath was released two years earlier .

production

The titles of the mixtape were produced by Hollywood Hank. The only exception is hip-hop musician Peter Maffya, who was responsible for the piece Sozialphobie . Hank used the Fruity Loops program to produce the album and the Sony Vegas program to edit it . Similar to the album Soziopath , released two years earlier, there are many samples, mostly movie quotes, on the album. Among them are Sin City and Underworld: Evolution . The audio post-processing of the mastering that took place after the recording was completed was taken over by Shneezin from the 257ers.

Naming

The name of the tape is an allusion to the title I live for hip hop by Berlin hip hop artist DJ Tomekk , which sounds like "Schlebe für Hip Hop" due to its Polish accent. Also, the name of mixtapes plays the rapper Shneezin of the hip-hop group 257ers , Favorite and Hollywood Hank, whose initials the letters "SFHH", short for S chläge f ÜR H ip H op revealed.

Texts

The texts of the mixtape can be assigned to the genre of battle rap . Favorite and Hollywood Hank access fictional opponents in highly exaggerated form, and give yourself up mentally disturbed violent ( "Am I on aggro, I verkloppe a thalidomide -Child."). Furthermore, the lyrical egos describe their drug use, perverse sexual preferences (“My animal instincts are resistant to therapy.”), Godlessness and a sexist attitude that glorifies violence. In addition, the two rappers allude to right-wing radicalism , which becomes clear in verses like "God sent me because Hitler was too friendly." Or the use of the chorus of the song Bombe by the right-wing rock band Sleipnir in a different pitch for the intro. The two hip-hop musicians process these non-conformist topics in allusions and word games, so-called punchlines , which are intended to entertain the listener.

Similar to Hollywood Hank's Sociopath , released two years earlier, there are several insults against other rappers on the album. The Berlin rapper Taichi , who played the song Neo 2.0. both by Hank ("I'm broke and fuck stupid hoes like Taichi in the ass") and by Keule257 ("Because I fuck stupid Thai whores like this Taichi like a Thailand tourist") and even a complete euthanasia with active euthanasia Disstrack has against himself on the album. Here, the comparison with prostitutes is often drawn ("You victim lick my sack and I'll punch you away like my ex ..."). Other rappers such as Massiv ("... I make mousse au chocolat out of Massiv ") or Afrob ("I rap and Afrob drinks my chamber pot in the meantime") are also mentioned by name. In addition, several other well-known people who are not in the rap business are mentioned on the album. Among them are Tara Reid and her drug problems at the time (“I need therapy like Tara Reid…”), Cindy from Marzahn (“I need a real German woman, I didn't immigrate and I propose to Cindy from Marzahn.”) And Cosma Shiva Hagen and her mother Nina Hagen ("I am the spawn of hell and Cosma Shiva Hagen"). Also, German rap is generally turned down quite often ("... German rap is gay shit.").

There are also several allusions to older releases by the two artists on the album. Hank calls himself a sociopath several times on the album and ends the track Anti Everything with this word . Favorite, whose discography was already much more pronounced than that of his collaboration partner at the time, often describes himself on the album as a harlequin and anarcho-rapper , alluding to his solo releases Harlekin and Anarcho . The rappers also reuse some old lines and passages, such as B. "Fingering your bitch is like throwing a salami into the hallway" (Original (2007): "Fingering your bitch is like feeding squids.") Or "Bitch mark the mouthful, I'll hit you in the mouth until you keep your mouth shut. "(Original (2005):" You mark the mouth hero? I hit you on your mouth until you keep your mouth shut. ")

Exceptions to the content are songs such as B. Anti Alles , which addresses Hank's negative attitudes towards other people (the topic was discussed in more detail six months later on the collaborative album Menschenfeind with JAW ) and Hope dies last (feat. Rickz and DonJohn) , which from the point of view of three Is a person, each of them describing an unusual situation, but leaving out precise facts and thus giving the listener the opportunity to think about the exact event for himself. In the latter, the stylistic device of tragedy is mainly used, which means that a key sentence of the verse can twist or unsettle the entire image of the listener that has been created up to that point.

technology

Both rappers use a very complex rhyming technique on the album, which mainly includes polysyllabic, assonant-sounding noun rhymes. Example on the song Deepthroat & Whip :

"You mean your girlfriend likes caressing and caressing ,
but the whore comes to me and screams for deepthroat and whip.
Fuck yourself , I give a shit about " money and competition " .
I want bitches, money and fame, as well as " Snoop DODouble Gissle " . "

- Hollywood Hank : Deepthroat & Whip

In addition, the rappers make use of many comparisons and metaphors (“Fav is back (bag) like English bags.").

Flow

One of the main features of the album is the flow, in which Hollywood Hank in particular stands out. He often uses the rap technique doubletime on several songs , where you rap at twice the speed of the beat. Almost as often, he also uses the exact opposite, halftime. Favorite, on the other hand, does not vary with the speed, but raps very powerfully and almost continuously uses the laid-back rap technique.

illustration

The cover shows the heads of Favorite and Hollywood Hank, whose faces are painted, against a black background. Favorites face coloring corresponds to the illustration on the cover of his album Harlekin . A rope can be seen between the two rappers. Lars Henning Schröder took the photos for the mixtape booklet. Jacob "D139" Roschinski was responsible for the design of the artwork.

marketing

The pre-sale of the mixtape was on October 27, 2008. As a listening sample, Selfmade Records released a song called “Online Single” entitled Organraub Pt. 2 , which could be downloaded for free . After the release of the sound carrier, the two rappers completed a concert tour together under the title Auf die kranke Tour .

criticism

The German hip-hop magazine Juice notes that the mixtape is not suitable for “youth protectionists” or “moralists”. Favorite and Hollywood Hank harmonize with each other and present "brutal punchlines" that ensure that the listener is well entertained by Beats for Hip Hop .

In a review of the website xrel.to, Favorite and Hollywood Hank are described as the "perfect team". From the point of view of the reviewer, the themes of the pieces hardly vary, with the exception of the songs Anti Alles and Neo 2.0 . Furthermore, the productions of the sound carrier are "inferior" and the guest contributions by Shneezin and Keule from the grouping of the 257s worsen the overall impression. However, the talent of the rappers is highlighted positively. In summary, Beats for Hip Hop is recommended to "connoisseurs and listeners of the rap scene".

From the point of view of the editors of RapSpot.de, the mixtape is not mass-compatible, but entertaining. The two rappers use numerous word games and humorous allusions, which is highlighted positively. A "highlight" is the guest contribution by rapper JAW, whereas the short playing time has been criticized negatively. Thanks to the “special humor” and the “complex rap and rhyming technique”, Beats is a “special pearl” for Hip Hop .

Thanks to the limited edition, in the opinion of the Backspin editorial team, the album is “probably already a classic”. In the rating of the magazine, the listener's openness to black humor is mentioned as a basic requirement when listening. Also, unlike other reviews, the beats are called charming.

Republication

In July 2012, hits for Hip Hop appeared as a re-release . Since the mixtape was originally published in a limited edition, the new version was called a "Re-Edition".
