Menschenfeind is an EP by German rappers JAW and Hollywood Hank . It was released on June 12, 2009 and is considered the last released album by Hollywood Hank.

Background and origin

Hollywood Hank, born Sven Pingel, grew up in Prenzlauer Berg , in East Berlin . Since the right wing scene was particularly strong in eastern Germany and Pingel's best friend at the time was a boy of African descent , he often had serious problems with the neo-Nazis. This went so far that one day Pingel was mistreated by them with nettles, which resulted in depression and recurring nightmares. A little later, when Pingel moved to the country, he often came into conflict with the neo-Nazis, which led to Pingel becoming a loner and provocateur . Since Pingel, according to his own statements, was not violent and therefore did not manage to take out his pent-up aggressions physically on other people, he began his violence and revenge fantasies , which were particularly due to the clashes with the neo-Nazis, but also with the bad relationship to his parents, to write down and a little later to bring to the public under the character Hollywood Hank, which he created.

JAW, born Jonas Andre Willy E. in Cologne , grew up in Baden-Württemberg , more precisely Freiburg im Breisgau . As doctors later diagnosed, psychological conflicts requiring treatment arose during puberty, including attention deficit disorder . Because of those psychological conflicts, E. already came into disputes with persons in authority , preferably teachers, in early adolescence , and accordingly received poor grades. Because of these and similar incidents, E. then developed into a misanthrope . However, since he, like Hollywood Hank, was unable to physically harm other people, he began to express this hatred from 2003 under the name JAW on various publications.

In mid-2003, Hollywood Hank and JAW finally got to know each other better via the RBA Internet platform and signed with the East German label Rapz-Records in 2006 . Since 2005, both Hank and JAW have featured on each other's publications. At the beginning of 2009, after several inquiries from the audience of the two rappers, misanthropy was announced.

production

In contrast to previous releases of the two performers, there is no executive producer at Menschenfeind . The majority of the beats are JAW and Hollywood Hank. JAW produced six tracks on the album; these are prologue , hatred of people , God has a sense of humor , plowed horse candy , sick world and epilogue . Hollywood Hank was involved in five beats; these are parental advisory , hardliners , God give them wings , leg discs and figures . Otherwise, Vizir ( Der Obszönling ), Beatgees ( The Clown in My Apartment ) and Adolph Ghandi ( Hardcore ) are represented as producers .

Both JAW and Hank used Fruity Loops for production and Sony Vegas for editing . The mixing and mastering was done by JAW.

The writing and recording of the album was done in about a week, according to JAW; it took him about three days to mix.

Similar to previous releases by the two artists, there are many samples on the album, mostly film quotes from controversial yet well-known films, such as B. Misanthropist by scandal director Gaspar Noé , Der narrow ridge by Terrence Malick and Die 120 Tage von Sodom by Pier Paolo Pasolini , who was already indexed in Germany at the time of the album's release.

Texts

With Misanthrope the motive of revenge to be taken. JAW and Hollywood Hank attribute various psychological conflicts and suffering processes that they have experienced to the behavior of people around them. The album should be a kind of "justice strike" and take revenge on special people and humanity in general. The word misanthropy and the misanthropy associated with it is particularly frequent on the album . The artists make use of various word games and allusions, so-called punchlines, which serve to entertain the listener. In addition, they use very explicit texts on the album, which underlines the non-conformist themes.

The exact points of attack and target persons (groups) change frequently on the album. One example is the track God has humor , in which a certain person, referred to by the two artists as just a fool, is attacked. Here, however, all points of attack relate to a stereotype . All points of attack relate to different groups of people who are hated by the artists and which are related to only one person. Among other things, they describe the "idiot" as a typical follower , typical group victim , as quite foolish , as an outsider and therefore a misogynist, etc. The associated refrain "You can't help it, you were born a fool. You are the living proof that God has a sense of humor… ”sums up all the aforementioned characteristics of a stereotype.

The opener Parental Advisory , for example, goes in a completely different direction , which thematically does not deal so much with the counterpoints of people, but rather the slight possibility of manipulation (“You have my album for three days, celebrate it and turn your father's neck ... ") and the subsequent killing of these people, hated by the artists (" ... take the ax and cut the stupid whore many times and then off to the forest, but healthy ones in the freezer ").

Another stylistic device of misanthropy that is used on this album can be found e.g. B. in the text of Hardcore . There, people, again not named, are accused of ill preferences or activities ("As you find irritatingly, your daddy's cock tastes of blood, now you know that your sister has the days. And your mother thinks the digested cum is Toffifee and serves it your father as a recipe for new 'cooking ideas'. ").

Another thematic song on the album is Sick World . This deals with the reasons for the hatred of people and the consequences of it. JAW z. B. says in his part that the reason for his drug use and illnesses (including attention deficit disorder ) is his bad experiences, especially the adaptation of different people to modern youth culture and the ridicule of people who do not adapt (“No capsule this world has ever filled my emptiness. I stand in front of the container with garbage with a gesture that embraces the world. No picture in this world can feel my scars, because at most it can depict death in colors, like a snuff film ”). Hollywood Hank names the widespread selfishness and the lack of helpfulness towards other people for his misanthropy as the main reason . As a result, he names almost all the traits that made him known as Hollywood Hank, including his propensity for violence ("... and now I'm pro violence like Tony Montana"), his excessive drug use ("I'm sick, try to fix it by drink and use all drugs for daily intoxication. "), his sick sexual preferences (" I take pep and weed, have no respect for anyone, think of exhumed or sex with animals ... ") and his habit of hurting himself (" ... because I feel disgusted with people and inflict pain on myself so that I can still see that I am alive. ").

JAW explained his words in an interview at meinrap.de:

“Let's put it this way: I was born a very nice, lovable and also cosmopolitan person. So nice, amiable and cosmopolitan that it would probably be a shock to many if they knew how selfless I used to be. Of course, I'm still a fool to a certain extent, but only with people for whom I think it makes sense. My experience is that positive traits are reversed in this world. The reductionist existence is turned into an offensive, since we can never exist as a selfless form of existence in our all-embracing environment. I had to learn that in this world you have to be harder and more ruthless than I would have liked. That's why I don't like the species. Here everyone pretends to be something of a welfare state, but in the end we are all in our small matrix, which is only slightly complicated compared to the animal kingdom, in which the aim is to secure one's life and make it as bearable as possible. No wonder that people go nuts and storm into school with machine guns. "

marketing

Weisse Scheiße published the song The Clown in my apartment to download for free. In addition, T-shirts with the inscription misanthropic and the corresponding cover were printed.

illustration

The cover is completely drawn. The majority of the cover is black, similar to the movie Sin City , only the color red is color coded. In the foreground is a bed on which lies a naked woman who, due to her immobility and lack of emotion, appears to be dead. To the right of the bed is a blood-smeared knife and under the bed is a clown representing Hollywood Hank. Also to the right of the bed is a stool on which an apparently crying boy is sitting and holding his hands in front of his face. These also appear to be bleeding or having blood poured over them. The boy represents JAW. On the far left of the picture is a window that looks out onto a red landscape with black skyscrapers. At the top of the picture is white shit presented in white and below in bright colors misanthrope .

criticism

The album was generally received very positively.

  • The German hip-hop site rappers.in gave the album a rating of 4/6 points. Above all, the author Benedict Dirschel praised "... the beats and the technical versatility of the two artists", but criticized the fact that "in addition to many well-thought-out and explained songs, there was also brute violence against the human race at the start". It is clear to him that their goal is "... to produce music that shocks ...", but she can "not win much more than a disparaging eye roll". All in all, he feels that the album makes him “... very well entertained ...” and considers both artists to be very talented, but would like to “treat the subject of hatred with a little more sensitivity than the older productions”.
  • The page 16bars.de rated the album with 4/5 points. The beats are "... very good and varied." And the artists "... are among my [his] favorite artists". However, "... the two features are by no means on the same level as the main rappers" and "... few songs [would] address the reason for the hatred of people".
  • HipHopBlog.at gave the album the highest rating with 5/5 points and describes both "the beats, the artists, and the word games are almost perfect". The fact that the two rappers “show the hatred of people sufficiently and also very skillfully, but hardly justify it” doesn't bother him, because the overall package convinces him very much.
  • The side HipHopJam.net forgave also the highest rating with 5.5 points. For them, both rappers had "again [presented] that they belong to the elite of hip-hop" and presented sick hate rap at the highest level on very "charming beats". The author does not understand the point of criticism that the features are not good, since "Adolph Ghandi is old next to his rap partner, but Me $$ age is completely convincing."
  • The well-known website Musik-Sammler.de rated the album with 9.5 / 10 of points. "The misanthropy [is] palpable everywhere ..." and "... tracks like The Clown in My Apartment [would] [transport] the hatred of people directly into the apartment". The author described the humor of the two rappers as "... rough ...", but nevertheless praised it as "... brilliant ..." and understood "... why this (the humor) [has] such a large following". The editor also described the beats as "... very good".
  • The German hip-hop magazine Juice rated the album as “the best collaboration album of the month”.
