Gertrud Pätsch (* January 22, 1910 in Einbeck as Gertrud Kettler ; † December 14, 1994 in Jena ) was a German ethnologist and philologist who has made a special contribution to the field of kart welology .

Life

The daughter of the publishing director Karl Kettler and his wife Mathilde, geb. Wulfestieg got her school-leaving certificate at the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium in Münster.

From 1929 she studied Protestant theology, from 1933 on because of oriental studies she was also enrolled in the Faculty of Philosophy and Natural Sciences with the main areas of work in the Christian Orient with special consideration of the biblical text history, as well as the study of Semitic , Slavic and Caucasian languages , etc. a. with Anton Baumstark junior , Ferdinand Hestermann in Münster and Tübingen.

In 1937 she did her doctorate at the University of Münster with Ferdinand Hestermann with a dissertation on Das Verbum Finitum in the old Georgian translation of the Gospel of Mark .

In 1946 she joined the KPD . She was editor of the Association of Religious Socialists in North Rhine-Westphalia. She became a member of the KP state leadership in North Rhine-Westphalia, was active in founding the Kulturbund Münster and in the people 's congress movement . Her articles appeared in the Westdeutscher Volks-Echo , which was published from 1946 until it was banned in 1948.

In 1948 she was a member of the West German People's Council delegation at the October celebrations in Moscow and Leningrad . She then moved to the Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ). She completed her habilitation on Indonesian Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where she was Director of Ethnology and taught general linguistics and Caucasus Studies at the Institute of Near East Asia, which she set up in collaboration with Heinrich Junker , and in some cases philosophy, as in the opening semester of the subject at Humboldt -Universität 1951/52 with the event The beginnings of philosophy among primitive peoples . In 1955, her basic questions on language theory appeared as a contribution to the development of linguistics in the GDR . She played a decisive role in the establishment and development of the Jena Caucasus Studies, which had existed since 1961, and was its director until her retirement, and together with Harry Spitzbardt she established Indonesian studies in Jena. After her retirement in 1970, she lectured for two years as a guest at the State University of Tbilisi .

Towards the end of her life she devoted herself to the translation of the medieval verse epic The Warrior in the Tiger Skin by Shota Rustaveli from Old Georgian . Pätsch wrote a large number of essays, including a. regularly in the scientific-literary magazine Bedi Kartlisa. Revue de Kartvélologie (German fate of Georgia ). Pätsch was committed to cultural traffic between Georgia and the GDR . It established the university partnership between Jena and Tbilisi . On a piece of land that she lived in near Jena, she had a guest house built especially for the many visits from Georgia, including Konstantine Gamsachurdia , whose works she translated. On one step of the stairs to her house were the letters of the Georgian alphabet engraved on it .

" After attending a congress at which Catholic theologians were also present, Gertrud Pätsch appeared somehow suspicious and was taken into" enlightenment " ." This was followed by about four years of work for the Ministry for State Security as GI "Gertrud", where she especially her nephew Heinrich-Hermann Ulrich , in the presidium of the main office of the Internal Mission and Aid Organization of the EKD (today Diakonie) , in Stuttgart.
