Martin Robbe (born September 22, 1932 in Bensheim-Auerbach ) is a German philosopher and historian specializing in developing countries and especially the Middle East .

Life

Robbe is the son of a businessman and the linguist Gertrud Pätsch , with whom he moved to the Soviet occupation zone in East Berlin in 1948 .

He visited u. a. the Paulinum high school in Münster and passed the Abitur in 1950 at the workers and farmers faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena.

From 1950 to 1955 he studied history at the University of Jena and then philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin , with a. a. Walter Hollitscher , with him he was an assistant in the field of formal logic, Wolfgang Harich , Karl Schröter, Hermann Scheler , Robert Naumann and Wolfgang Heise . He then worked as an assistant at the Berlin School of Economics , where he taught dialectical materialism , and from 1958 to 1962 he was an aspirant at the Humboldt University. His dissertation Myth, Religion and Society. A criticism of the remythization of bourgeois religious studies and theory in the epoch of the fall of capitalism and the rise of socialism dealt with problems of the history of Islam and Christianity; it was supervised by Heinrich Junker and Wolfgang Heise.

From 1962 until its dissolution in 1992 he worked at the German Academy of Sciences . In 1963 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. In 1968 he completed additional studies in Cairo. Until 1969 he was head of the working group "Middle East" at the Institute for Orient Research. In 1970 he became head of the History Department of the Developing Countries at the Central History Institute. In 1986 he became deputy director of the Institute for General History of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. In 1980 he received his habilitation and in 1983 he was appointed professor.

Robbe was president of the GDR-Arab Republic of Egypt friendship committee and a member of various scientific committees. Until the end of its publication in 2002, he was co-editor and editor-in-chief of the magazine Asia Africa Latin America , prior to that he was editor of the notices of the Institute for Orient Research . Articles published by him a. in: German foreign policy , unity , German journal for philosophy , horizon , journal for historical science , Asia Africa Latin America, Berlin Debate Initial , Marxist sheets .

Robbe also wrote popular science books and did translations.

He is u. a. was married to the economist Waltraud Falk .
