Kai Hafez

Kai Hafez (* 1964 in Bielefeld ) is a German political and media scientist . Since 2003 he has been Professor of Comparative Analysis of Media Systems and Communication Cultures at the University of Erfurt .

Life

From 1985 to 1994 Hafez studied political science, modern history, journalism and Islamic studies at the University of Hamburg and Georgetown University in Washington, DC From 1995 onwards, he worked as a research assistant at the German Orient Institute in Hamburg and received his doctorate . He completed his habilitation in 2001 and was qualified to teach political science. Parallel to his work in Erfurt, he held a visiting professorship at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Bern from 2002 to 2009 . Guest lectureships and research stays have also taken him to the University of Cambridge , the University of Oxford , the Hamburg Media School and the American University of Cairo . From 2006 to 2009 he was a member of the German Islam Conference , within which he participated in the working group “Economy and Media”.

Hafez's work at the University of Erfurt moves on the border between communication and political science. He conducts research on the one hand on the political relations between the West and the Islamic world, the comparison of these two political cultures and Muslims in the West, on the other hand on the theory of international reporting, cross- cultural media ethics , communication between the Islamic and Western world, media in the Middle East as well as media and Immigration.

He is a member of the Migration Council . Hafez was with Alexander Thumfart in February 2020 in the context of the government crisis in Thuringia coordinator of a declaration by 163 scientists from the University of Erfurt, who called for democratic cohesion, turned against the AfD Thuringia and spoke out in favor of new elections to the Thuringian state parliament .
