The Vintgar Gorge

The Vintgarklamm ( Slovenian : Blejski vintgar ) is a gorge about 4 km northwest of Bled in Slovenia . It can be reached from Bled via the villages of Grad, Grinsce, Sp.-Gorje and Zg.Graben. The gorge belongs to the Triglav National Park and was developed as a tourist attraction at the end of the 19th century. In addition, the river valley is one of the protected natural monuments .

The gorge was washed out by the Radovna river up to 300 meters deep between the vertical walls of the mountains Hom and Boršt, is approx. 1600 m long and ends at the 13 m high Šum waterfall . This gives it the highest drop of all river waterfalls in Slovenia. The Radovna River has its source in the Julian Alps at an altitude of approx.  1000  m, northeast of Triglav .

A paid hiking trail leads about 30 minutes over bridges, wooden walkways and galleries through the towering gorge.

Surname

The origin of the name Vintgar is unclear. The explanation is given from the German vineyard , as viticulture was carried out in nearby Buchheim . Alternatively it is stated that the gorge profile resembles a wing glass. The name Vintgar has expanded into a generic name for gorges in Slovenian, as evidenced by examples such as Iški vintgar , Ribniški vintgar and Bistriški vintgar .

history

The gorge was discovered in 1891 by the then mayor of Gorje , Jakob Žumer, together with the cartographer and photographer Benedikt Lergetporer from Bled. Out of enthusiasm, they founded a building committee, and just two years later the gorge was open to everyone.

In the course of time, the wooden footbridge was washed away several times by floods , which is why it is a little higher today than in the first few years. In addition, steel nets have now been attached to exposed places to protect against falling rocks.

The site manager Jakob Žumer is commemorated in the middle of the gorge with a small plaque in Slovenian and German .
