German Orient Foundation
The German Orient Foundation (DOS) is an association that researches the Near and Middle East . It was founded in 1960 and is now based in Berlin .
history
The organization was started by the Nah- und Mittelost-Verein e. V. (NUMOV) founded. Due to the importance of NUMOV, it has received extensive support since its foundation and quickly developed into the leading institution of modern oriental studies in Germany and Europe. DOS has the task of developing and promoting relations between Germany and the states and societies of the Near and Middle East in the scientific, economic, cultural and political fields.
Regional focuses are the MENA region , Turkey , the countries on the Persian Gulf , Iran , South and Southeast Asia as well as the Islamic societies of Central and Near East. The main focus of the academic work is on contemporary political, economic and cultural research on economic, humanities and social science issues.

The board of directors and the board of trustees are made up of representatives from politics, business and science. The Chairman of the Management Board is Philipp Lührs , Senior Vice President Global Head of Project at Kuehne + Nagel .

German Orient Institute (DOI)
Under the DOS, the German Orient Institute (DOI) works as the oldest private, non-profit scientific institution for Near and Middle East research in Europe. Since 1960 the institute has published the scientific journal Orient - German journal for politics, economy and culture of the Orient with specialist articles, essays and book reviews by international experts on regional topics. The Orient appears every three months.
