Hermann Scheler (philosopher)

Hermann Scheler (born November 23, 1911 in Ernstthal near Neuhaus ; † January 25, 1972 in Berlin ) was a resistance fighter , German Marxist-Leninist philosopher and university professor .

Life

Scheler grew up in a working-class family. In his early youth he became a member and soon afterwards a functionary in the Communist Youth Association of Germany (KJVD). In 1932 he became the editor of a socialist newspaper. After the transfer of power to the NSDAP , Hermann Scheler was active in the resistance against National Socialism . From May to December 1933 he headed the group of the " Communist Party (Opposition) " (KPO) in Thuringia . He belonged to the Gera resistance group Giessner . In the same year he was arrested for prohibited communist propaganda, sentenced to a prison term and then transferred to a concentration camp.

From 1950 to 1962 he worked at the Humboldt University in Berlin . After obtaining his degree with a diploma , he held a two-year aspiration . This was followed by his doctorate in 1955 on problems of the Marxist-Leninist theory of war and peace. He then worked as a lecturer and from 1958 was entrusted with a professorship for dialectical and historical materialism .

In 1959, Scheler took part in the 4th World Congress for Sociology in Stresa / Italy and thus initiated a step towards the recognition of sociology as a scientific subject in the GDR.

From 1962 to 1965 he worked as a department head in the Institute for Philosophy at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .

From 1965 to 1968 he held the chair for philosophical problems in social sciences at the Marxist-Leninist Philosophy section of the Humboldt University in Berlin. In 1968 he retired .
